Amazon.co.uk Review

Regularly touted as one of the best British sitcoms ever, Only Fools and Horses kicked off in 1981 when mobile phones were the size of bricks and wine bars were the ultimate places to hang out in. The formula was simple enough: Cockney wideboy Derek Trotter (brilliantly played by David Jason) dreams of better things for himself while sharing a cramped council flat in the nicely named Peckham tower block Nelson Mandela House with his unworldly brother Rodney and his sweet but doddery old grandad. Trouble is, Del's endless money-making schemes (such as his attempt to flog a consignment of one-legged turkeys, or his plan to sell bottled tap water) inevitably backfire, like the knackered old Robin Reliant van he uses to cart around all this faulty gear in.

Created by John Sullivan, who also sings the very catchy theme tune, Only Fools and Horses is a wonderful mix of dodgy but loveable characters (such as Del Boy's dimwit friend Trigger), knockabout slapstick (no-one falls down with as much comedic grace as Jason) and brilliantly crafted dialogue. Sadly, Leonard Pierce who played Grandad died in 1983; but his armchair in the Trotter household was filled in 1985 by Buster Merryfield as Uncle Albert (an old merchant seaman who bores Del and Rodney with tales of his war days). The show ran to seven series and ended with characteristic warmth in 1991, when Del Boy became a father; but the Trotters made occasional returns to the small screens with six hugely popular one-off Christmas specials. As Del Boy himself might say: "Lovely jubbly." --Edward Lawrenson

This exclusive Complete Series Seven, together on one double video for the first time ever. Episodes include: The Sky's The Limit, The Chance of a Lunchtime, Stage Fright, The Class of '62, He Ain't Heavy, He's My Uncle, Three Men, A Woman and a Baby. This series is one of the most enjoyable as the Trotter's embark one yet another adventure. These include Directing an Airplane towards their famous flat - The Nelson Mandela House, Uncle Albert leaving Home, The dreaded former policeman - Roy Slater's return and Del finally settling down and having a son named Damien who turns out to be an Omen through the eyes of Del's brother Rodney. What else could you ask for from a whole series of Peckham's greatest dodgy dealers of all time! A Must Buy!

Very good. 8 Sep 2004

Just a few words on this new DVD release. I believe this series contains the best ever episode in "The Sky's the Limit". This is where Del Boy brings Europe to a stand still after handling a stolen Radar dish. Sheer genius in the writing.

However there are two negative points here. One is you don't get the "Christmas Specials" as the official reviewer states. Hence, no "Miami Twice", "Mother's Natures Son", nor "Fatal Extraction". It includes only the original 6 fifty minute episodes aired from 30/12/90 to 3/2/91.

Secondly, for some inexcusable reason the BBC have edited the music from "Three Men, a Woman and a Baby". The whole joke of Del's son being called Damien is the "Omen" link. One of the best gags is Rodney's face looking at Damien with the infamous Carl Orff's da da dum dum. Now we are subjected to some god-awful never heard of opera. I am sure there must be a copyright issue or something but hasn't the Beeb made enough money from DVD's to keep them original???

I know this seems picky but it really is quite annoying. This is the reason for only 4 stars and not the deserved 5.

However, you get nearly five hours of sheer brilliance. And by the way I actually have a musical doorbell!!!!!!

The final series. 8 Dec 2007
By Reaper
Format:DVD
It is recommended that you watch 'Rodney Come Home' first as the Christmas special's plot line links to this series. Series Seven is the final series of 'Only Fools and Horses.' There maybe some Christmas specials that follow but one cannot help feeling tragic when this series finished because never again will 'Fools' episodes be shown weekly like this. Series Six relied more on elaborate plots whereas this series relies on funny conversations. Most notably Albert's tale of being in Africa and wetting himself when he imitates a roar of a lion. There is more pathos in this episode as Raquel becomes pregnant and Albert gets 'mugged' but it never loses comedy.

Notable moments include: Del buying a satellite dish (The Sky's the Limit); Raquel announcing being pregnant (The Chance of a Lunchtime); Tony Angelino singing at the Starlight Rooms with a slight problem (Stage Fright); Roy Slater returns with a bombshell (The Class of '62); Albert gets 'mugged' (He Ain't Heavy, He's My Uncle) and Raquel giving birth to Damien (Three Men, a Woman, and a Baby).

Overall a nice polished series to finish 'Fools' in the sense that there are no other series.
