Blimey! It only seems like it was last year that I was claiming that "Pure", the last album by Chris Laney, was "guaranteed to fill the floor at the Newcastle Mayfair, any Friday night in 1989".

Which may well be connected to the fact that it was only last year, but working on the principle that there is no such thing as too much good music, he's rattled out another solo album of top quality, eighties guitar rock. And to that end, he's brought in a few special guests to try and give this record - technical term alert - more 'oomph' than its predescessor. So that'll be Europe drummer Ian Haugland, ex Hanoi Rocks / Electric Boys guitarist Conny Bloom, some co-writes from former Kiss man Bruce Kulick and, oh yes, a guitar solo from Thin Lizzy / Motorhead fella Brian Robertson.

So far, so eighties. But it's not one of those high school reunions where everybody looks fatter, balder and lies about how great their lives have been. Nope, Mr Laney has put together an exemplary set of songs that make the old rocker in me very happy indeed. Most of the album is up-tempo melodic hard rock which, for those of us who yearn for the days of big hair and bigger choruses, makes for a fantastic listening experience.

You can't go wrong with tunes as good as 'Gotta Run', 'Love So Bad' and the more Leppard than Leppard 'One Kiss Tonight'. If this actually was the eighties, then Mutt Lange would have a bit more competition for production gigs, as Chris Laney has come up with an absolutely huge rawk sound. Take one listen to the title track and tell me this isn't immense. If you do, you're a liar. Too be fair, there are a couple of tracks where you wish that a really Grade A singer was hitting the notes, but musically, this is a joy.

Fans of `Crashdiet', `Crazy Lixx' and `H.E.A.T', please note that this guy here has produced some of our favorite albums!! 5 Jun. 2010
By Nikiforos V. Skoumas - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
He has produced albums of 'Crashdiet', 'Crazy Lixx', 'Dynazty' and 'H.e.a.t' therefore being a crucial figure in the development of the current Glam/Sleaze/hard rock scene in Sweden. As a lead guitarist/songwriter Chris Laney's CV verifies him as an international glam metaller: A member of `Animal', the US sleaze metal outfit led by ex-`W.A.S.P.' rhythm guitarist Randy Piper, with whom he recorded two albums. At the same time he has co-written, performed and produced the latest album of iconic UK glamster, Steevi Jaimz.

In 2009 he put out his first solo album entitled `Pure' and as the title suggests it was an authentic dose of `80s influenced glam metal (naturally in the style of the bands he has been producing).

`Only come out at night' is Laney's second solo attempt, demonstrating a much broader variety of sounds (all of them falling into the glam/sleaze/hard rock genres) plus a good number of guest appearances the most well known probably being guitarist Conny Bloom and Brian Robertson (`Thin Lizzy'), drummer Ian Haugland (`Europe') and George Egg (`Dynazty').For the biggest part however it is Laney that handles lead guitars, vocals and the overall arrangements which, as proven before, are more than enough to put together a powerful and memorable hair metal/hard rock record.

Favorite tracks include `Only come out at night' which has the `RP Animal' trademark riffs and lyrics, the hugely melodic `B4 it is 2 late' that has `Crazy Lixx' written all over it; plus the hard rocking (perhaps AOR-ish) `One night kiss' that reminds one of Steevi Jaimz solo album. Finally the recklessness of `Gotta run' references directly `Crashdiet'. What all this suggests is that the album is as diverse as it gets while remaining within the hair metal style.

If you are a fan of any of the bands or artists mentioned above you have to get this; Chris Laney combines the best of our favorite bands into an 11 track album that should `Only come out at night'.

"Classic Rock" UK magazine (issue 146) marks this album with 8/10 commenting: One of Europe's finest purveyors of sleazy but tuneful hard rock.
