Product Description

BBC Review

It’s taken the Wu-Tang Clan’s slang master Raekwon the thick end of 15 years of inferior albums and market-flooding mixtapes to craft a genuinely worthy follow-up to landmark solo debut Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…. Indeed, this sequel had been mooted so long its status in hip hop circles had become nearly as mythical as Dr Dre’s still-unreleased Detox.

Treading in such lauded footsteps, half-baking Pt. II wasn’t really an option. Just as well, then, that it more than lives up to the hype, rolling back that aforementioned decade and a half to recapture sizzling career-defining form. Evoking the claustrophobic atmospheres of OB4CL… to the extent it’s easy to forget Raekwon is rapping from a contemporary standpoint, he once again animates a drugs-running and violence-filled street life narrative with rare colour and attention to gritty detail.

It’s not only Raekwon’s A game that is resurrected, either. Broadening the original album’s cinematic production spectrum beyond backing from Wu comrade RZA, nigh on every beat calls on big guns without feeling like unit-shifting super producer box-ticking. Dr Dre and the late J Dilla bring particular heat alongside, almost inevitably, RZA, despite Raekwon’s prior protestations that his crewmate wouldn’t feature, after bad blood between the two.

Also in keeping with the OB4CL… spirit, fellow Wu mic assassin Ghostface Killah reprises his lead guest credit, distinctive urgent delivery snaking around Raekwon’s effortlessly flowing wordplay. For the most part, it’s the role Ghostface was born to play and when he trades bars with Raekwon on the ominous Penitentiary it’s a genuine pleasure to behold.

’Hood-examining highlight Sonny’s Missing is sufficiently vivid to render television’s greatest inner city dramatisation, The Wire, as a two-dimensional caricature, lighting up a Pete Rock beat that slinks through shadowy sonic alleyways. And in continuing the multi-angle widescreen crime saga scope of OB4CL…, Raekwon’s true talent soars.

Perhaps the most telling line arrives on Broken Safety, when Jadakiss sagely declares “F*** saving hip hop / We bringing the streets back,” reminding us that nobody else, not even his Wu-Tang companions, relates street stories with Raekwon’s eloquence. --Adam Kennedy

5.0 out of 5 stars Another classic 7 Sep 2009
By CRAZE
Format:Audio CD
just got mine today and coundnt wait to get home and put it on,have to say im impressed but i expected nothing else.People will compare it to his first and its got that same great wu feel but the first was more than 10 years ago so they aint gonna be the same however this is excellent from beginning to end,Rae's always been one of my fav's and he's still got it plus you get the fellow clan members drop hot verses throwout plus other faces like Jadakiss, styles p,beanie sigal and busta who drops a killer verse over a usual dope production from dre, talking bout the production is a must like i said before its got that great wu feel from heavy weights like Rza,Dre,Pete rock,Alchemist and the late great J dilla, nice to see dilla continue shinning after his death, the track "Ason jones" is a dedication to ODB and its an instant classic with beautiful production from Dilla, plus theres newish faces like Bt,necro and karim. All the tracks are seriously dope. This is REAL hiphop at its best and one of the best releases of the last few years, apsolutely sh#ts on Blueprint 3.All hiphop fans get yours now.
New Wu for the 2009 Raekwon is a living legend keep doin ya thing boy show these rookies how to cook it up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 11 Oct 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx was a gift for a friend's CD collection and was much appreciated. It is a matter of some concern however that Amazon have failed to provide a refund for a faulty Samsung laptop which was returned to A&S Media.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best rap album of 2009! 7 July 2010
By A92
Format:Audio CD
When i heard Raekwon and Ghostface Killah were linking up once more to make a sequel there critically acclaimed classic album of the same name (part 1) I had mixed feelings. This is because i didn't think either Raekwon or Ghostface Killah were as good as they were back in the 90's and i felt that by releasing this album, they may ruin the extremely high reputation of Only Built for Cuban Linx part 1.

However...i am happy to say i was 100% wrong. Raekwon and Ghostface Killah fuses both there old grimy street lyrics to newer more modern beats and make it look easy. That being said i do not think this album is as good as Part 1, nor is it a classic. But it is a must have album for Wu Tang fans and rap fans alike.

Rating - 8/10

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not that good 23 July 2010
By Taz
Format:Audio CD
All I'm gonna say is that you should get hold of this for two songs.. Mean Streets and New Wu. Not a classic in the slightest. It can't compare to Cuban Linx I as it's 14 years (!!) since the original and hip hop back then was truly original. But this album brings together some of the classic interludes from Wu affilliate albums of old which gives you a feeling of wanting to reminisce.

Just pop it into ya car stereo, flick to number 8 and turn it up... LOUD...... LOUDER!!!!
