Review

Jethro has provided a useful contribution to the developing field of online therapy. This book is an enjoyable and worthwhile read and a must for any therapist considering embarking on this approach to therapy. Full of practical examples and easy to understand references I would highly recommend this book to therapists from a diverse range of disciplines who want to get the most out of their online work with clients. --Lisa Wake, Former Chair of UKCP and author of Neurolinguistic Psychotherapy: A Postmodern Perspective

This engaging book takes the reader on a journey into language, exploring its use in online therapy. Jethro imbues his subject with infectious enthusiasm and makes his points in a lively and refreshing way through a series of online workshops. This book will benefit anyone who already works with words and should be required reading for anyone planning to work online as a psychological therapist. --Gill Jones, Past Chairman, Association for Counselling and Therapy Online.

Product Description

The book explores a variety of linguistic skills and how to apply them in online therapy. The skills employed are taken from the main scope of neurolinguistic theory and therefore focus on the words themselves and how the client presents them to the therapist.

Online Therapy - Reading Between the Lines by Jethro Adlington is an extremely useful resource for online counsellors. Jethro obviously has a great deal of experience, knowledge and understanding of working both synchronously and asynchronously. The book is set out in a systematic `lesson by lesson' format each chapter illustrating different aspects of the online counselling process. Jethro is the `teacher' of `students' who ask pertinent questions allowing him to give detailed and clear responses to whatever aspect is being covered. I really like the chatty style in which he delivers his master classes. His answers are supported by convincing examples in the context of a possible communication. Exercises and writing tasks are offered in each chapter and in the final chapter which enable skills or aspects of the work to be re-enforced.

I found clarity in the descriptions and examples Jethro includes in his book the aim of which was to focus on the range of counselling and therapy skills which can be employed when working alone online. Jethro has succeeded in doing this with precision. It is an ideal book to have at hand when working online.

I found this book useful when considering ways of working online as it is easy to understand and an enjoyable read. It is written in an accessible and occasionally humourous style as the reader follows the learning curve of the trainees taking part in online tutorials with the author, Jethro. Techniques in NLP and brief working are useful inclusions along with illustrating useful suggestions and skills for the therapist when working online generally. I would have welcomed more client examples when working with e-mail (chapter 14) but on the whole this book would provide a useful resource for counsellors who already work online or are due to commence training in providing this form of therapy.
