Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Everything I know about online marketing, I have picked up online, as and when a need arose. This is the first time I've actually read a book dedicated to the subject. At first glance, this looks like a compact little guide that will provide you with a brief overview. Looks are deceptive though and it doesn't take long for you to realize that there is really a huge amount of information packed into the 200+ pages of this book.

The book is written in a fairly informal style, which I think is perfect for the new media topic being covered. You can read it cover-to-cover and/or dip into it when you have a question. It covers everything you would expect: digital branding, email marketing & advertising (including Search Engine Optimisation) plus social media (twitter & facebook, LinkedIn, blogging and more. If you've heard of twitter but don't have a clue how it could benefit your business, this book is for you. You never feel like you're being thrown into the deep end with this book, because it explains everything in laymans terms without being patronizing. At the same time, it does go beyond just the basics and there is some quite detailed information as you get deeper into each topic so if you're like me and already know a bit, you will still get lots more from the book.

With the way the internet is always leaping forwards and upwards and sideways and every which way you can imagine, I think this book will become out-dated very quickly but as it stands, right now, this book is really very relevant. I actually did enjoy reading it (and that's coming from someone who doesn't usually enjoy how-to, manual-type books). The book gave me plenty of food for thought, even on topics that I thought I had completely covered. My small complaint about the book has to be that I wish there had been more: sometimes things are mentioned and then covered only fleetingly - not a huge problem as you can always do your own research online, using the book as a springboard or sorts. It's not a book for advanced users as too much of the book overall covers basics but beginners and intermediates will find the book quite helpful.

The problem with a manual like this is that the subject it covers lives and breathes and has a tendency to change. Keep that in mind when you purchase this book and use it as a foundation to your thinking but back it up with more modern journals and articles. Teaches the basics very well however.

A sharp introduction 20 Jan 2012
By S. D. Spicer VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I have been involved in a business start up recently and the arrival of this book was timely as the business advisor had just started talking about online marketing.
I read this cover to cover twice. It gave me a lot of very useful information concisely that otherwise I would have had to scour the web for; and whilst it is the work of one person, it gives you enough shades of opinion with out having to weigh out conflicting information. Most of what I read here in an evening or two has been subsequently proved true and it help us short-cut our marketing thinking.
This is a book to get if you want the thinking behind the marketing processes, it's great even if you have no idea about online marketing but want to get somewhere. If you want a step-by-step guide with specifics then I'm afraid you'll be disappointed, if you don't 'get' social media or computers this won't help you. But for people starting up I can think of no better introduction.
