I thought I knew a bit about websites and marketing, but faced with having to set up my own website this book was recommended to me and proved quite amazing. Its user friendly. It has lots of space to write ideas down in - intentionally so and its written in a way that avoids jargon and gets you coming up with ideas about what your website is trying to do for you. It gets you thinking about what your customers are looking for, what your values are and guides you through generating your own design brief. A very painless read, the book doesn't tell you what to do, but effortlessly gets you to think about what your website is for, who it is targeted at, what you want to say and what your customer wants to hear.
The book is well written in generally plain english avoiding technical phrases and never straying from the central theme of giving the reader the insight to enable them to create a successful website ie its very readable and written in a very effective style.
Whether you are going to build your own site - and although I'm using a web designer I feel confident I could build a website now, or whether you want to prepare a brief and turn it over to a pro this little book gets you where you need to be fairly effortlessly. Its designed to get you thinking without cold towels or the need to retire to a darkened room and although I thought I knew something about websites I actually knew very little about the design process. The book lives up to its title - you can start and finish in 7 days without ever feeling stressed or that you aren't making progress and if I took a few days longer the point is that this is a well structured not so much thought provoking but thought capturing book (by which I mean it gets you generating and writing down the ideas which will inform your website) reading this cannot fail to help you produce a better product.
The only other thing Id say is that this is a workbook. It encourages you to think, and then write your ideas down so you don't forget anything you need to incorporate in your website. This means big margins and boxes for your thoughts. The book isn't expensive and I'd buy it new rather than second hand just in case someones already written their ideas down in it!
