I bought the Onkyo home theater system (HTX-22HDX plus 5.1 optional speakers) based largely on a rave review by CNET.uk, which rated it 4.5 stars out of 5, along with happy reviews on amazon.uk's site by many satisfied buyers. I chose to give these more weight than the tepid review by CNET's American colleague, CNET.com, which awarded only 3 stars.
Alas, the Yanks seem to have got it right. The sound is okay, but not much more. Yes, it's better than the sound of my new Samsung 46-inch TV, but not enough better to justify the cost, in my opinion. The bass is a bit thumpy, and the smaller speakers lack "presence," if that's the word, or maybe clarity. All in all, the sound is a little muddy.
To be fair, I have no experience with any other home theater system, so maybe this one is actually better than others of the same price range. My frame of reference is my excellent audio music system, with its Roksan amplifier and Quad speakers. Its sound is fabulous, but then it cost about 4 times the Onkyo's price.
Be aware that the Onkyo's bass/amplifier unit needs to be placed fairly close to the TV, blu-ray player and other electronic boxes, because all them are connected to it. That was not a problem for me, and the connections are easy because of the generous HDMI inputs. If your TV, like mine, has ARC capability, you can control the Onkyo with your TV remote, which is a big plus. The Onkyo goes on and off automatically when the TV does, and the TV controls its volume. It's not so easy to figure out how to set up this number, though. The opaque instruction book is not helpful. And if you lack ARC, you'll be adopting a new remote into the bosom of your family. You may need to use it anyway to switch input devices.
I'm not going to return the Onkyo, because it's too much trouble, and because I'm not sure what would be better. If I had it to do over again, I might buy a separate amplifier and two or three high-quality speakers (the "surround" aspect doesn't add much for me). Or maybe I would get a Yamaha sound bar. Or an all-in-one Panasonic system with blu-ray player (such as recommended by What Hi-Fi), which would be cheaper. Hard to know. Since I live in deep country, in France, I can't audition first. I recommend that you do that if you can (and then, of course, buy from Amazon, whose service and prices are top-notch).
