I've been using this player for half a year now and must say I'm pretty satisfied. Sound is good, changing discs isn't nearly as loud as some reviews led me to believe, and well, it simply does its job very well. As with all electronic devices, there are some minor quibbles that could be addressed, see for yourself how relevant they are to you.

* Biggest criticism is one time the disc changer failed and a CD got stuck inside the machine, forcing me to screw the thing open. Not good. However: it happened just once, and it occurred with a CD-R which had a cheap sort of label/sticker stuck onto it. Never any problem occurred with 'proper' CD's or CD-R's without such label-thingies on top of them.
* The device screen doesn't display how many tracks there are on a disc - so the machine doesn't tell you how long before the CD is over. Oh well.
* It isn't the fastest CD-reader on the planet; takes a few seconds before playback begins. Not nearly long enough to bother me though.
* Obviously, the 6-disc changer is physically deeper than most regular receivers/amplifiers/cd/tape-players, which means you need space or stereo furniture with appropriate dimensions. It measures about the same surface as my turntable and could theoretically fit underneath it.
* There's a typical, small red light when the machine is in stand-by mode. More recent Onkyo devices (like my amp) don't have any stand-by light at all, which I prefer.
* I use it in combination with a Onkyo TX8050 Stereo Receiver, which works fine. Small detail: If you use the TX8050's remote for both devices, there's no feature to switch discs.

...And that's about all the quibbles I can think of. I'd definitely recommend this one, particularly since it's reasonably priced and there's not a lot of choice left for CD-players with disc changers. Go for it!

I've been looking for a multi disc player for ages and had near given up hope. It all seems to be one disc only which doesn't in my opinion give you the choice and selection to play what you want. I knew that if I wanted something that would play more than one disc I would go back to the separate idea of having a tuner/receiver, cd player, etc. So that was my plan, finding was actually more difficult. I had been so used to Sony but their range has narrowed in fact I have found that in general if you want listen to your music it's all about the I docking system this and that. Well that's alright but a lot of outlets solely cater for just that. Not very open market choice orientated is it? But finally I managed to find a set, because I needed a tuner/receiver as well as the multi cd player, and I've been able to used my wharfdale speakers for the first time. Absolutely wonderful, I'm chuffed to bits, the range in what I can play is there, the ability to tune my bass, treble with a bit more precision is there. The sound is great, no harm to other mini-hifi's that I've had in the past boy does it make such a difference to the music. It doesn't sound tinny or shallow and none of the gimmicks that usually go along with the modern hifi systems. This to me was a decision well worth it, if you want the sound, the choice and for me it along with the tuner/receiver that I got at the same time they were actual easier to set-up. I would definitely recommend for that quality, it's unknown make as far as I'm concerned, like I said the last set was sony and that was 20 years ago. And both lots lasted over 10 years. So I'm pleased that I've made the right decision to go back to separates, rather than one. I'll not be giving a note on the tuner/receiver separately since I've mentioned it more than once.Read more ›

Quality is certainly the word , playing NR818amp only one negative ,no earphone sock, which I find very useful
Not only for phones, however a Beautiful sound very smooth for classical with bags of sharpness when required,
I reckon it needs to stand just below eye level,so you. Can see to place your CDs safely in the carrier, although
No longer in production onkyo will have to will have to do some electronic magic (maybe like include.a phone
Socket including preamp+vol ......for me to replace this charmer .
