In 1949 Kihachiro Onitsuka took a good look around his native Kobe, Japan, and came to a simple conclusion; that the country's youth were in need of direction and inspiration after the devastation of the Second World War. They needed a healthier, more positive lifestyle, and a new sense of community optimism and awareness. He passionately believed that the best way to achieve this was through sport. So, he started to make athletic shoes in his own home. What followed has gone down in sporting history. Mr. Onitsuka built a world-renowned sportswear company based on the philosophy that continually pushed the boundaries of design and innovation. When first starting out in humble surroundings in Kobe, Mr. Onitsuka found inspiration in some unlikely places. An octopus tentacle stuck to the bottom of his bowl of Japanese salad was the inspiration for the suction cup soles for the basketball shoes in 1951. In 1959, a motorcycle engine was the inspiration for running shoe ventilation and improved comfort. It was the Olympic games of the 1960s that affirmed Onitsuka Tiger’s worldwide fame and respect, with the shoes used at the 1968 games being the first to incorporate the now famous Tiger Stripes. Cut forward to the modern day, and Onitsuka Tiger re-introduces these original footwear models with a contemporary twist. The year 2009 marked Onitsuka Tiger's 60th anniversary. The now firmly established brand is a must-have for those in the know. Onitsuka Tiger is seen on fashionable and trend setting feet the world over.
