Review

"Coombs is successful in linking effective crisis planning to the effective navigation of diverse sets of crisis management writings and diverse areas of knowledge ranging from small-group decision making to evaluation methods... the depth of information received within each chapter as both individual chapters and a collection of chapters makes this book a definite read for organization practitioners in many fields and education. The book is suitable for a variety of industry practitioners, scholars, faculty, and students in fields as communication studies, public relations, business management, and emergency management." (Jennifer F. Wood Ph.D. ) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

The best guide to crisis management 24 Feb 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As both a student and professional of crisis management and communication, I have read countless articles and books on the topic. After a while, they all start to sound alike, and you can begin to wonder whether there's really anything new and insightful out there.

This book is it.

The author compiles research from a vast number of fields, as well as adding some of his own analysis resulting from a distinguished professional and academic career. The final product is the best "holistic" guide to crisis management I've ever read. Although it is a slim volume, it took me a couple of weeks to read, take notes, and reflect on the contents--it's that densely packed with ideas and information.

I personally found that it re-sparked my excitement and enthusiasm for this complex, challenging field.

My favorite crisis management reference so far 7 Mar 2012
By Dane Mom - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
In the past six months I've read a few books on crisis management and this is my favorite. Coombs put together a concise book that is well organized, easy to read, and brimming with useful information. He used the three-phase (pre-crisis, crisis, post-crisis) model as a foundation after comparing it with other more robust models.

Because this was published recently (2012), the examples were current and memorable. As much as I dig the Tylenol/cyanide case study, it's nice to learn from events that have happened in the past few years.

I originally purchased this as a required text for graduate school but have used it as much, if not more, at work in building a crisis management plan from scratch. For someone who needs a grip on the basics, this is an appropriate tool. For a person with extensive crisis management experience, it may fall short of expectations.
Interesting read 8 Mar 2011

While I have only read about four chapters so far it seems to be spot on. He has raised some very valid points while at the same time rehashing very old ideas. Good book over all. The delivery was also very quick, paid for the average delivery and got it within 4 days. Thanks to all.
