Product Description

Product Description

A temporary halt in his quest for stardom playing in a rock band in the late 1970s led to Clive Tully taking up writing for outdoors magazines, and from there, travel features for newspapers and local radio. He has travelled widely, often walking or backpacking in the world’s wild places, and he has led a trek in the Himalayas for British Everest legend Doug Scott.

His natural appetite for excitement inspired him to take on more and more adventurous pursuits. He was the first journalist to fly in a hot air balloon in Russia, has travelled at over 90mph in a four-man bobsleigh down the Olympic Bob run in St Moritz, and descended to the bottom of Windermere in the English Lake District in a submersible. He has also taken part in an attempt to break the record for circumnavigating the world by powerboat, and still holds the official powerboat transatlantic record from New York to Lizard Point.

Many of these are featured in "One of our Balloons is Missing", an anthology of Clive's travel writing from the past 30 years. Join him on the trip to the bottom of Windermere, and the high-adrenaline bobsleigh ride, and the trip to Soviet Russia which gives the book its name - "One of our Balloons is Missing"

An award-winning writer, photographer and broadcaster, Clive Tully specialises in outdoors leisure and adventure travel. He has been equipment editor of four walking magazines, and correspondent for many more, including his own column in the Weekend section of the Daily Telegraph. His travel features have appeared in a variety of UK national newspapers.

I'm really enjoying this book of offbeat travel writing, by a writer who seems to be totally mad and will do almost anything - flying over Russia in a hot-air balloon, going heli-hiking (I'd never heard of it till I read this book!), snowmobiling, going down an Olympic bobsleigh run at St Moritz, hiking in the Falkland Islands. It's in the great tradition of eccentric British travellers, downplaying the dangers, playing up the fun and the thrills, and producing a really entertaining book of travel writing.

Interesting and funny, a great book to read before bed (nice short chapters).
The author really bring the places he has visited to life, with some funny anecdotes to boot.

I thought I had a fairly interesting and active life but having read this I really do need to get out more !

All in all a good read and I hear the author is quite a mean bass player too !
