It seems like so many romance novels feature an 18-year-old virgin, it's nice to read a book about a woman who's been around a bit. Lottie is experienced, even loose, and she was doing well in society until she got a bit too careless and was cast off by her husband. She finds herself in dire straits, but then she is rescued by Ethan, who offers to make her his mistress. Both Lottie and Ethan enter into the relationship as a business deal, and neither one wants to admit they are developing feelings for the other.
Ethan is a prisoner of war, and he is involved in traitorous schemes. Lottie is torn over whether to get involved. Mostly, though, she just resents that she is falling in love with him faster than he is falling in love with her. My favorite scene was the masked ball at Lottie's ex-husband's house, where Lottie gets some subtle and humorous revenge, and then rescues Ethan from British soldiers.
There is a bit of excitement, a bit of intrigue, and it all works out in the end, just as you would expect it to. A good offering from a good author.
