4.0 out of 5 stars Funny with some real heat. 22 Jan 2012

One of Ms Wildes better novels. A Keeper. It was funny. It was hot and steamy. I liked Lady Cecily and Jonathan Bourne, the Earl of Augustine. They match each other very well. She isn't a fragile flower and he was intense though still humourous. Very good all in all.As well as good secondary characters which will have their own story.Which means that I am going to get the follow up book, 'Twice Fallen', the story of the Earl's sister.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars for a undemanding yet sweet romance 4 Jun 2011
By sarah stewart - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Jonathon, Earl of Augustine is the son of an English aristocrat and daughter of an Indian chief. He comes to England to settle his father's estate when he dies. Jonathon has every intention of going back to America once his business is sorted but in the meantime he meets and is very attracted to Lady Cecily Francis. Cecily is also very taken with the "Savage Earl" but she is almost engaged to Lord Drury. Cecily and Jonathon fall in love but many barriers have to be overcome before they can have their 'happy ever after' including the scandal of Jonathon's illegitimate daughter, his resentful yet ruined sister, an aggrieved almost fiancée and the attitudes of the ton to a "half-caste".

I agree with the other reviewers who say that this is a subdued start to a new series. There was a lot that Wildes could have done to set this book on fire, not least making it a lot harder for Cecily and Jonathon to have their HEA in light of his heritage. To be honest, I got a tad bored half way through and nearly gave up reading it. But I am glad I stuck with it because it turned into a nice little romance which I enjoyed. I gave it four stars because Wildes did not follow the current trend of wild sex scenes by page three.

As a stand alone this book is only so-so, but I think its merits come in that it is setting up a series that sounds like it will be fun. I'm hoping that Jonathon's sister Lilian gets a true hero in the next of the series: Twice Fallen: Ladies in Waiting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ladies in waiting 5 May 2011
By A&D - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I had never read any books by this author, and I was very excited to read this historical novel taking place in England and in America. The title of the book seemed interesting.

About the plot: This story tells about Lady Cecily Francis who is "forced" to become the wife of Lord Drury. But she is more interested in dangerously handsomeEarl of Augustine-the American whom everyone is whispering about She wished to rather marry this one instead of Lord Drury. Agustine is American-Iroquois, and has three half sisters to take care of and hopes to marry them off. He is equally charmed by the young Lady Cecily.

Although I liked it overall, this book comes off as bit too typical to me. The male hero is partly a Native American, and he is named Earl Savage. While I realize that this is a historical romance, I still felt uncomfortable reading some parts because it seemed that the author had not done a lot of historical background studies of the historical era and culture when writing this story. However, despite the shortcomings of this novel, the theme, the plot and the pace of the story was good. Therefore, I gave this story 3 stars. If the background and cultural research had been better, then I would have given this story 5 stars.

If you like historical romances, I would recommend to read this novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall, One Whisper Away is a decent Regency romance with a few flaws. 11 May 2011

One Whisper Away by Emma Wildes
Historical Romance - May 3rd, 2011
3 1/2 stars

Lady Cecily Francis has just been introduced to London Society when she had an incident with the mysterious and exciting Earl of Augustine - a half Indian, half American whom the ton has dubbed Lord Savage. All Augustine wanted was to go back to America, but he has to settle his business in London first, which means he has to marry off the three sisters. However, Cecily is being pressured to marry Lord Drury, a man that her sister has a tendre for! To escape from a marriage with Lord Drury, she proposed a fake engagement with Augustine. The problem is Augustine is very, very attracted to Cecily...

One Whisper Away has a really interesting premise - the exotic male character that attracts the prim and proper English Rose. However, the pacing of the book is quite slow in the beginning. Also, a lot of side characters are introduced in the beginning making it hard to keep track of who's who. To me, it feels like the author focused too much on the numerous side characters. It feels like I have to wade through the supporting characters' plotlines just to get to a single scene that focuses on Cecily and Augustine. I think the book would be much more interesting if the author had given us more scenes between the two main characters.

Overall, One Whisper Away is a decent Regency romance with a few flaws.
