The author has recently ended a long-term relationship, and travels to Egypt with a sense of adventure and possibly escape. As is typically with travel stories there is both an inner and and outer journey in this book. Besides for being a well written and crafted story, Dean brings (as always) an intimacy to his writing. I like the fact that he does not shy away from uncomfortable feelings and experiences, but describes them clearly, as they are. In this way his story touches you.

The climax of the story is a remarkable dream. In this dream I sensed that "the other" could also represent himself. Or it could represent me, or you. I appreciated this sense of connectedness.

The famous poet Rumi wrote:
"Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I will meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about
language, ideas, even the phrase each other
doesn't make any sense. "

I first discovered Dean's writing (and other talents) in 2004, via his former blog. I have been an internet "fan" of his since then.

This is a deeply personal story of one man's physical and meta-physical journey. At times, the story is told almost like a guide book - and at other times it is more a poem.

I was reminded of the power of a 'Hero's Journey' format (which I love) and echoes of Dan Millman's Peaceful Warrior.

This is a book that deserves a really luxurious reading; perhaps curled up under a blanket by the fire at Christmas. The story transports you to exotic physical locations (e.g. Egypt) and you can also accompany the author as he makes a personal exploration and transformation.

Rather like watching a butterfly emerge from a chrysalis, do not expect every page to grab you buy the throat like a formulaic thriller novel. Rather, take the time to read and reflect on what you notice as you read and, like the butterfly, you will discover that the investment is well worth it.

I suspect that each time I re-read this book, I will love it more and more. Therefore, consider the 4/5 star rating as an interim position. I'd recommend treating this book like a favourite book of poems or a complex novel - not a simplistic 'off the shelf' read. Buy it, treasure it, read and re-read it; and notice what you notice along your own journey.
