Product Description

CD Description

When Lenny Kaye s original, life-affirming Nuggets anthology
of mid- 60s US garage bands appeared out of nowhere in 1972,
it sent a worldwide army of enthusiasts scurrying off to track
down the complete recorded works of the featured groups. It
took a while for them to discover that many acts had
summoned up whatever artless teenage genius they possessed
solely for the duration of one unfeasibly perfect three-chord,
two-minute blast.
The Knickerbockers, however, were the exception that proved
the rule. Represented on Nuggets by their uncanny Beatles
soundalike single Lies , the group had actually cut a whole
stack of bona fide garage pop gems including follow-up singles
One Track Mind and the controversial, psychedelicallyoriented
High On Love - during a relatively lengthy career
that also saw them dabble with varying degrees of success in
big production MOR pop, Four Seasons-style harmony outings
and Righteous Brothers-influenced blue-eyed soul.
One Track Mind: The Garage Pop Sound of the Knickerbockers
does exactly what it says on the tin, eschewing the group s
more anodyne work to concentrate on showcasing the
Knickerbockers doing what they did best: hook-laden, garageoriented
teen pop that was heavily influenced by the British
Invasion. Here, then, is the definitive, all-killer-no-filler
compilation of thirty original Knickerbockers artyfacts from the
first psychedelic era

When the Knickerbockers cut a single called Lies (are breaking my heart) people swore it was the Beatles especially as the melody approximates Run for your life.
This was to become the groups biggest hit.
Named for a street in New York rather than an item of wearing apparel they had been formed by ex members of the Royal Teens and the Castle Kings and went on to make 3 albums before member Jimmy Walker became a Righteous Brother
Thus the Knickerbockers were bang in the tradition of American pre Invasion groups who used Beatles and Searchers influences.
By the end of the decade the sound of the Knickerbockers had seemingly passed to Gary Puckett & the Union Gap who had the same producer in Jerry Fuller

one hit wonders 22 Oct 2011

Although I can see why they were probably a great live house band. Most of these songs are unforgettable. "Lies" , however, is a classic.
Great Music Badly Promoted 2 Aug 2011
By Morten Vindberg - Published on Amazon.com
The Knickerbockers were without doubt one among many bands that with the right promotion, could have made it much bigger than just one single hit, "Lies".

This number has secured the group a (small) place in music history since the song sounded so much like the Beatles / John Lennon that many thought that it was the Fab-Four under alias.

After a couple of relatively uninteresting albums consisting of cover versions, the group issued their own original song "Lies" on a single and the success of the song obviously meant that a new album had to be recorded.

This album, "Lies", consisted of twelve tracks, six of them (side 1) were solid rock inspired by the British wave. Side two consisted of more mainstream pop, a choice probably made by the record company to give the album a broader appeal. In retrospect this was probably a poor choice, for as this compilation shows, the group had the numbers to make really solid rock album.

The album did not sell particularly well, but the group released throughout 1966 a number of very fine singles, on which the group gradually created a personal sound, partly thanks to extensive use of wind instruments. In doing this they succeeded maintaning the rock expression, giving the music a bigger and fuller sound. Also worth noting that both sides of these singles were on a high level, and that most are included on this compilation.

Moreover the rock song from "Lies", some solid outtakes and a few cover songs from 1965 album "Jerk and Twine Time" are included.

Despite their fine music, the record company Challenge did not manage to get the group the success they deserved and after one single in 1968 was the group split up.

This compilation includes most of the group's finest recordings.
Much more the an "One Hit Wonder" i.e. Lies 1966. 19 July 2011

The song that gave them a One Hit Wonder status is:
Lies - The Knickerbockers [Bergenfield, New Jersey] - No.20 on 1/1/1966. 9 weeks Top 40. - "AMG Pick. The best and most accurate early Beatles-esque imitation ever recorded; The lead vocals were a dead ringer for John Lennon." - One Track Mind: The Garage Pop Sound Of The Knickerbockers [Import UK] (Grapefruit)-2010.

I bought this compilation from an Amazon site's 3rd party new for $15.28 USD including S/H.

What you get is 30 songs, 1:19:14 total time, 182 MB (MP3 format, 320kbps, VBR set at Highest Quality) in iTunes.

I'm giving this compilation a rating of 4 stars (#stars/#tracks).
This compilation is one of my better finds, and I would advise you to check them out.

YES they were most noted for sounding Beatles-esque, BUT they also had a sound of their own that will make you happy to get something by them.

BOTTOM LINE: I was expecting a few songs that I liked, BUT was pleasantly surprised that one song after another were mostly above average, with an exception of 3 songs, with 4 reaching the Top Tier from this era.
If you have a taste for music in the last half of the 1960's you will be pleased with what you hear, I was. :-)

Here are my favorites off this compilation. Just click on the song titles to see what's available on youtube including my new uploads that weren't available before:

What Does That Make You (Mono) - The Knickerbockers - 1967 - "AMG Pick. One of their few truly Garage-Rock songs. Very good vocals and 3-cord guitar riffs."

Lies (Stereo) - The Knickerbockers - No.20 on 1/1/1966. 9 weeks Top 40. - "AMG Pick. The best and most accurate early Beatles-esque imitation ever recorded; The lead vocals were a dead ringer for John Lennon."
NOTE: See above.

Guaranteed Satisfaction (Stereo Unreleased at the time) - The Knickerbockers - 2010 - "He's your man ladies in this song. Nice vocals/harmony, Garage-Pop Rock beat."

Love Is A Bird (Mono) - The Knickerbockers - 1966 - "Good impression on the Jim Seals penned song. The vocal harmonies (Guess Who-esque) date-stamps this time period very well. Nice backward-guitar riffs."
