Product Description

CD Description

This is a classic collaboration featuring two giants of the US country/americana scene. The album features songs by Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt and Russell himself.

About the Artist

Tom Russell has recorded 25 records and one DVD. His songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Doug Sahm, Nancy Griffith, Joe Ely, Iris Dement, Ian Tyson, KD Lang, Suzy Bogguss, Ramblin´ Jack Elliott, Jeff Walker, Dave Van Ronk and other great artists. Tom has appeared on the David Letterman TV show four times in the last few years, and his songs have appeared in a dozen movies and several television series In 2009 Tom co-produced, and was a featured guest, on the critically acclaimed Gretchen Peters record One To The Heart, One To The Head which included Tom`s song "Guadalupe" and songs by Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt. Gretchen Peters is the daughter of an author/activist father and a mother whom Peters describes as a "free spirit", she was raised in New York and Boulder, Colorado, but moved to Nashville in the late 80's "when they were still signing people like Steve Earle and Nanci Griffith". Rejecting the Nashville assembly-line model and eschewing what she laughingly calls gratuitous co-writing , she nevertheless accumulated enough accolades as a songwriter, for artists as wide-ranging as Martina McBride, Etta James, Trisha Yearwood, Bonnie Raitt, The Neville Brothers, Patty Loveless, George Strait, Neil Diamond, Bryan Adams and Faith Hill, to earn her a recording contract in 1996. As a performer, she began touring in the UK and Ireland soon after her debut album The Secret Of Life was released, which was named by Mojo magazine as one of the year s best records.

Being a big Tom Russell fan and also owning a couple of albums by Gretchen Peters I thought I would give this a try - SO glad I did - it did not disappoint! All the songs are thoughtfully interpreted and beautifully delivered. Some are more familiar than others, both the (short) North Platte tracks are purely instrumentals, but pleasant listening none the less. I was so impressed with the album I bought two more copies for other family members all of whom were delighted with the album. There is not a great deal of dueting which is a good thing in my opinion as both artist's voices warrant their own space. Interestingly both artists have got together again on Tom Russell's latest album 'Blood and Candle Smoke' to great effect. If you like 'One to the Heart' then DO NOT miss out on 'Blood and Candle Smoke' Blood and Candle Smoke- wonderfully original songs that really tick all the boxes - just brilliant! One song 'Guadalupe' appears on both albums - it's such a beautiful, heart rendering song I can certainly understand why. Personally I think GP just has the edge over TR on this one - see what you think!

a real musical treat 5 July 2010
Format:Audio CD
I had heard the Gaudalope track just once on radio and somehow it impacted greatly.
I did a bit of research and that was how I found out about Gretchen Peters and Tom Russell.
This album is worth a listen to because there are so many out standing tracks. I love playing it the whole way through because so much musically happens with each individual track.
This was a truly crafted album because even now after a constant playing there still lies a huge amount of enjoyment from listening.
Tom Russel duets on a few tracks and adds to the experience rather than detracting.
If you have never heard of Gretchen Peters then you do not know the range of material over the years she has produced. This is album to listen to alone because some of the lyrics are spell bounding. When I heard the words of Gaudalope I was struck by the honesty and sincerity given to the disbeliever of the song. Yet there remained that yearning for hope amongst those that just survive.
I say take a chance on this album and be amazed by the depth of meaning of some of the songs and the range of styles.
it does not grate at any given point.
Sheer enjpyment

GP and TR in great form with the standout Tom Rusell song Guadalupe, the best version of Bob Dylan's Billy 4 I have ever heard and Joel Guzman's sublime backing this is an album well worth listening to.
