Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The French Kicks' debut full-length, One Time Bells, includes 11 smart pop hits--albeit in a proto-post-art-punk vein. This tight four-piece pulls together intricate, discordant parts from two guitars and three vocalists to form polished rock&roll bursting with energy. Athletic drummer Nick Stumpf is also a talented frontman: his fluid, Britpop, whiney-boy vocals cannot be denied and, no disputing, each song has a beat. Rolling Stone panned the Kicks as derivative of fellow New Yorkers the Strokes, but a far better reference point is that great Austin band Spoon--the Kicks also sing about how nasty girls can be and how hard love is to jam-packed catchy riffs, spiky beats, and keyboards that actually add to the proceedings. --Jillian Steinberger

2.0 out of 5 stars The Interpol b-side collection, 13 May 2003
By untitled no. 4 (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I decided to buy this album after hearing them compared to Interpol. One can see the points for comparison. French Kicks have an Interpolean monotonous approach to playing. Their singer tries to sound sexily dramatic as Interpol's frontman (sorry, I'm not good with names) does. But it doesn't work. The result, at it's best is track no. 4 -- Down Now which is actually charming in an 80s kinda way. It's worst is the title track -- One Time Bells which kicks off like the Theme From S-Express (for those of you who have a sickeningly vivid memory of the 80s like I do) and continues like something really went wrong in the 80s. Well, we all know that something actually did go wrong in the 80s, but does it mean that everything that ever went wrong needs to be revisited? The song, in simpler words, sounds like an embarrassing pop experiment with guitars the next door kids could produce. Sunday Night Is Fair with its "ooh la la la" vocals sounds like a bad version of suede (Coming Up era, not to be confused with Debut and Dog Man Star era). Piano, which is the last song on the album and is supposed to to leave you wanting more, reminded me of Seasons In The Sun which is amusing if you're in a good mood.
I bought this album trying to fill in the void that is left by Interpol but I think I will have to wait for Interpol's 2nd album. The best compliment I can give this album that it sounds like a compilation of b-sides that Interpol could write on a really bad day while clipping their toe-nails. Skip this one, unless you're loaded and you really can't find anything better to do with your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars This album dosn't want to be your friend., 4 Sep 2005
Man, this album is difficult to like. It's one of 'those' albums, like My Bloody Valentine's 'Loveless' or Interpol's 'Turn on the Bright Lights'. It's utterly confusing on first listen leaving you cold to it but has that 'something' that brings you back. Whether it's the album's one moment of near normality in 'Close To Modern' (which they still try to sabotage by recording under what sounds like a thick coat) or the unshakable feeling that there actually IS a TUNE hiding somewhere in 'Wrong Side' there's something to drag you back.

Where 'One Time Bells' is 'difficult' is in it's just plain odd time signatures and phrase lengths. Not only do the French Kicks write songs in 5/4 or 7/8 but they also don't believe in the 8 bar cycle of your average band. This often gives the feeling that the songs are juddering formless wierdfests played backwards. Not only that but there's a penchant for dissonant guitars and 'not quite with the rest of the band' bass lines.

Much like how you learn to listen through the fuzz while still coming to terms with its presence on My Bloody Valentines 'Loveless' - Once you tune in to the abnormal rhythmic patterns and syncopated drum beats of the French Kicks, the songs become totally accsessible to you. Once you're in, it turns out the songs are quite 'sweet' and often kind of sad, they often reveal a sensitive side that anyone would miss on the first run through. Granted you'll never be able to sit down with your mum and liten to it while having a coffee but when did you ever want to do that?
