Book Description

When Ted falls out of bed, three tearaway mice whisk him off on a breathtaking adventure. They zoom around in fast cars, go on a balloon ride and climb a building-block mountain. It's all very exciting, but will it get Ted back to bed? This book's counting theme is perfectly woven into a magical, rhythmic text. A future classic from the award-winning author of THE GRUFFALO and THE GRUFFALO'S CHILD.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best bedtime books 5 Aug 2008
By rachel
Format:Board book
This is a lovely book and a favourite with my son since 18 months (he is now coming up to 2). The illustrations are endearing and the poem leads through the numbers in a simple but eloquent way. A lot of the vocabulary falls neatly into the 'first words' category (car, star, etc) so even at a very young age children can join in with the story and remember concepts. Although we have read this time and time again I am still enjoying it. Would highly recommend as a first birthday gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shorter than her others but very much loved 29 July 2008
Format:Paperback
My twin two-year olds absolutely love this story. As does their mother: it's a quick read; ends on a gentle, bedtime note; has decent, not contrived rhymes; and doesn't grate or get boring. The illustrations are lovely and the story is sweet. It's always a request at nap times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute 31 May 2009
Format:Board book
I love this book and so does my son (nearly two). The illustrations are beautiful; the Ted is endearing and the mice are life-like and CUTE! Although it is a counting book it does not feel at all contrived and Ted manages to go on quite an adventure in quite a short poem. No gimmicks, just a lovely book that grows on you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Julia Donaldsons best book by far 24 Nov 2008
Format:Paperback
If your child loves teddy bears this book will be a big hit. Written in the typical Julia Donaldson style with her brilliant rhyming this story is about a teddy bear who falls out of bed and about all the toys he meets along the way who help him to get back into bed. Brilliant, Brilliant Brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars A counting game with a difference! 11 Feb 2008
By ooOoo VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
From Julia Donaldson, author of The Gruffalo.

Large format paperback with 32 shiny high quality pages in the popular two-page spread format, with clear text.
Delightful illustrations throughout, from Anna Currey, further enhanced by meaningful facial expressions.

From the back cover:

'One ted falls out of bed.
How will he ever get back in?
Count with Ted from one to ten as he goes on an amazing night-time adventure.'

Examples of text:

'One ted falls out of bed.
He tugs and pulls the bedclothes BUT.......Two eyes are tight shut.
He jumps and shouts and makes a fuss,
Till three mice say, "Play with us!"........'

Oh dear - Ted is out of bed, and his owner is too fast asleep to notice.....but Ted finds himself taken on a great adventure as the pages count up to ten, and back again!
And..... all is well that ends well, as Ted is back where he started, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just a gorgeous book! 16 Nov 2009
Format:Board book
We originally found this book in our local library and our little girl took an instant like to it. We bought it off Amazon Christmas 2008 for her. It now almost Christmas 2009 and this book still comes out at least once a week to be read!

She has grown with it, now counting all of the things on each page (i.e., the 6 dolls drinking tea etc) and always asks for her teddy whenever we've read it to give him a cuddle too.

Beautiful, beautiful book that your child will love always.

When my daughter first read this, she wasn't impressed. One ted falls out of bed, he tugs and pulls the bedclothes but two eyes are tight shut. He jumps and shouts and makes a fuss till three mice say play with us... and so on.

it's gentle, short and simple - the story counts up to ten and back down again. And it's all rather lovely. Not immediately lovely, but it really grows on you. Undoubtedly aimed at younger children than some of Donaldson's other work, but it's a goodie

There are a few perennial over-used themes in books for small children; animals, the alphabet, colours, and numbers. One Ted is another numbers book. Having said that it is lovely and the poetry makes up for the unoriginal starting point.

After Ted falls out of bed an increasing number of toys have a little adventure around the bedroom with him until the ten bricks he has built in a staircase come crashing down. The poem then reverse counts to the point where his sleeping child wakes up and scoops him safely into bed again.

It's not my favourite book by this author but I'm happy for it to be on the bookshelf of my 4 year-old (he first enjoyed it just before his second birthday).

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous way to teach counting
A simply beautiful book; the text is extremely simple and is a good way of encouraging children to count, but what makes it a winner for me is the way it's illustrated. Read more
