AS GOOD AS IT GETS 10 Feb 2004
Format:Paperback
I collect children's illustrated picture books and of the
nearly 1500 I have, this is one of my all time favorites.

I am partial to both architecture and sense of place in my
selections. This has both, in spades. The text is sparse;
the pictures illustrate the mood of the text perfectly.
It is eerie. You can feel the wind blowing over the landscape,
hear the black cat hiss, see the leaves falling off the trees,
hear the barn door banging on its hinges. The animals are
restless, the barn owl screeches. the dog barks through the
window.

But at dawn, a new star shines over the ancient church, the wind
dies down, the animals have quieted down and are enjoying the
new day. The little dog enters the church to find some peace
and some morning sun and even a bit of humor on the last page.

I can't say enough great things about this simple little book.

Creepy 1 Aug 2007
By Margaret Hale - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
If you're in the mood to answer a lot of questions about tombs and ghosts, this is the book for you. Add to this the ghostly nature of the little white dog and more questions about what might have happened to him ("Is he dead!?!" my little one asked, panic stricken) and you have a real downer of a bedtime story. Last page shows the dog jumping back onto the tomb and taking his place at his masters'(dead) feet as he turns back into stone. Skip it.
One of the most unusual children's boooks you will ever see 9 May 2011

I was very taken with this book. Although my daughter, only 2 years old as a write this, isn't really old enough to be scared by "ghosts" and doesn't understand that the little white dog is in fact one, she loves the simple story, sparse words and beautiful drawings. It's one of her favorite books. A nice change from the usual sweet rhymes and sweet stories we usually read to our kids. This one has just a little something special.
Beautiful presentation of subject matter 21 Oct 2008

Now come on, most of us remember absolutely loving mild ghost tales when we were small fry! My little Caroline picked this book out herself from our public library (she was about three at the time). I was a little unsure, but looked the book over, and finding nothing too questionable we checked it out and read it together. We both delighted in the wonderful atmosphere of the book. The illustrations are lovely and evocative. It has since become an all time favorite and was so glad to find it here so that we can finally own a copy of ourselves! It is a supernatural delight, perfect for a Halloween evening read.
