I collect children's illustrated picture books and of the
nearly 1500 I have, this is one of my all time favorites.
I am partial to both architecture and sense of place in my
selections. This has both, in spades. The text is sparse;
the pictures illustrate the mood of the text perfectly.
It is eerie. You can feel the wind blowing over the landscape,
hear the black cat hiss, see the leaves falling off the trees,
hear the barn door banging on its hinges. The animals are
restless, the barn owl screeches. the dog barks through the
window.
But at dawn, a new star shines over the ancient church, the wind
dies down, the animals have quieted down and are enjoying the
new day. The little dog enters the church to find some peace
and some morning sun and even a bit of humor on the last page.
I can't say enough great things about this simple little book.
