Product Description

Twins, Iskander and Osman, are inseparable. Living in the hills of Anatolia, the nomadic life of their tribe is all they've ever known. But when janisseries come to their home, Iskander is sent to Constantinople to work as a slave in the Sultan's palace, for, according to the Sultan's decree, one son is enough for any family. Osman swears he will find and free his brother somehow, but how can he overcome the impossible distance that now lies between them, the wishes of their family, and the decree of the Sultan?

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read for adults as well, 4 May 2010
This review is from: One Son Is Enough (Paperback)
I have always loved Peggy Woodford's work and been able to carry it in my head
for much longer than normal after I have finished it, but this book is full of so many images, it should also be marketed as general fiction - not just for children!

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect exciting novel for foreign students, 18 Feb 2007
This review is from: One Son Is Enough (Paperback)
I found the perfect antidote after a particular day of stress and tiredness: when sleep avoids you and your mind is racing and when a glass (or two) of wine would not be enough. The remedy is a book called "one son is enough" by Peggy Woodford.
English is not my first language, being French, but I would recommend this book to any foreign student learning English as the clarity of the prose and the use of the English language is so evocative that you can see and touch the costumes and their rich colour, cand feel the hot sand under your feet, the pungent smells in the narrow streets reach you and live with the despair of the boys trying to run evil and the angry waters. The research has been thorough and you learn quite a lot about the geography and landscape as well as the traditions of the nomadic life followed by life at the Topkapi. The whole picture is not one of violence and destruction. Harmony and the good do prevail (refreshing change). If you need to, you can refer to the glossary of foreign terms and the list of characters would be a great help to someone getting 'lost'. Yes a great book that I wish I could have found when I was learning English but also a book you should take with you next time you fly, wait for a train or your turn at the dentist....

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting read!, 21 Dec 2006
This review is from: One Son Is Enough (Paperback)
This is a great story about the strength of family ties, set in nineteenth century Turkey. Nomad boy Osman's twin brother, Iskander, is taken away to serve at the royal court in Constantinople as the sultan has decreed that one son per family is enough. The book follows both boys' exciting adventures: Iskander's struggles to adapt to life in the royal palace and Osman's determination to rescue him. One of the most interesting parts of the book is when Osman joins a troupe of entertainers and becomes a "chengi", a boy disguised as a dancing girl. The novel is full of historical details: you feel you can really see, touch, hear, smell and taste life in a nomadic tribe. By the end of the book it is a challenge to return to the real world! I really enjoyed this book and found it difficult to put down.
