Outstanding 17 Nov 2006
Format:Audio CD
First saw Paradise Lost supporting a little known grindcore band called Cerebral Fix at the Barrel Organ in Birmingham in 1988. They followed a less than impressive debut LP with Gothic, Shades Of God, Icon and Draconian Times. Most fans tend to argue about which of these four is their best. For me it's their 6th CD, One Second. Some said at the time that it was a "departure" but for me it was an absolute classic particularly on the title track and their finest ever track - Say Just Words. Maybe it was a little more upbeat than their previous efforts but it just blew me away. The PL history goes a bit shaky after this, one record company after another and no real idea which direction to take. Needless to say, their latest CD - Paradiselost is a marked return to their halcyon days - Saw them live in Birmingham 18 years after their first performance, this time supporting Opeth. PL were phenomenal and closed a great set with an incredible rendition of Say Just Words. One Second is the place to start with Paradise Lost in my mind but all of their CD's are worthy of 5 stars that's for sure - Pioneers of British Goth Metal, long may they continue.

Professional & polished 28 April 2006
Format:Vinyl
Gone are the days when they did it to look cool or indulge in the gothic rock which inspired them. Now they're serious about being big.

More accessible, or commercial if you're being critical, this is lighter, catchy recrds intended to stay in the head. Maybe I'm putting them down - Icon was a great record, and the darker sound has gone. There are some good tracks on this - One Second and Say Just Words, and the delicate Take Me Down is the sort of thing musicians aspire to.

But this ain't the rock previous records got us used to. Blood of Another is pop, so is Sane. The band have done well, but they alienated fans in the process. Somehow I think they'll bring in new ones too.
