Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
More often than not tales told in bars are by far the most entertaining and humorous we encounter. In One People Guy Kennaway has "collected" a number of tales he was told in Blackie's Bar, Cousins Cove, Jamaica. The dialogue, heavy with Jamaican vernacular, is often diffused by the effects of Red Stripe beer and a few too many spliffs. This light episodic novel is easy reading. One People is not pretentious nor does it preach to the reader. Beginning with the creation of Jamaica through intense volcanic activity we are introduced to the characters of this somewhat backward piece of land. Kenneway's characters are not bright by any stretch of the imagination, but they are not empty either. Sometimes inept, sometimes confused, they are always funny. One People will both entertain and relax you. Humorous from beginning to end, this is an ideal stress reliever. --Jon Smith

Product Description
Drawing on extensive time spent there, the author creates a slice of small-town Jamaica in his depiction of Cousins Cove, where everybody has a say in everything and no secret, dispute or relationship is private.

This review is from: One People (Paperback)
A beautiful book. I have given this book to Jamaicans and people who know nothing about Jamaica and it has been loved by all.
Kennaway captures perfectly the charm of the island while not hiding the warts. Written in a mixture of traditional English and patois it reads and flows fantastically to create a snapshot of a small village in Jamdung.
Lickshot!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a must read for all Jamaicans!, 31 Jan 1999

One people is like an award winning snapshot of one aspect of Jamaican culture. Its the best thing I've read in years - I was laughing out loud! I'm amazed at Kennaway's ability to record the tiny details that only Jamaicans can appreciate in their fellow countrymen. Every Jamaican should read this book!
