More often than not tales told in bars are by far the most entertaining and humorous we encounter. In One People Guy Kennaway has "collected" a number of tales he was told in Blackie's Bar, Cousins Cove, Jamaica. The dialogue, heavy with Jamaican vernacular, is often diffused by the effects of Red Stripe beer and a few too many spliffs. This light episodic novel is easy reading. One People is not pretentious nor does it preach to the reader. Beginning with the creation of Jamaica through intense volcanic activity we are introduced to the characters of this somewhat backward piece of land. Kenneway's characters are not bright by any stretch of the imagination, but they are not empty either. Sometimes inept, sometimes confused, they are always funny. One People will both entertain and relax you. Humorous from beginning to end, this is an ideal stress reliever. --Jon Smith
