Product Description

Anything can happen after dark . . .

Tired of being treated like a servant by her own family, Lady Jane Guthrie finally has a chance to escape . . . at least for one night. Attired in a daring gown, she arrives at a scandalous courtesans' masquerade ball looking forward to her few hours of freedom. But when she sees Seth Rutledge, her skin begins to tingle with anticipation. Many years ago, Seth broke her heart by falling for her beautiful, title-hungry sister. But now here he is, right in front of her, offering her his lips . . .

Embittered by war, Seth returns home to inherit the title that would have once won him the woman of his dreams. Though duty demands he wed, he's convinced passion no longer has a place in his life . . . until a masked siren sets his heart aflame. Desperate to find her again, he has no idea it's his childhood friend Jane—and that after one night together their lives will never be the same.

Tired of her servitude to her own family, Lady Jane Guthrie gets the chance to escape--at least for one night--by donning a daring gown to attend a scandalous courtesans's masquerade ball, where she encounters Seth Rutledge, the man she has always loved but who has had eyes only for her title-hungry sister. Original.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and simple 14 Feb 2008
By Helen Hancox TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is a short but enjoyable book which explores what can happen when a childhood romance is rekindled. Jane Spencer, now the widow Lady Guthrie, is virtually imprisoned by her brother-in-law whilst in mourning for her husband but after fifteen months decides to try to sneak out of the house to at least have some enjoyment in her life. Her two friends take her to a masque ball where she bumps into her childhood playmate, Seth Rutledge, now Earl of St Claire. Because of her mask Seth doesn't recognise her but he is instantly attracted to Jane, and Jane to him, although her identity remains hidden. Seth is looking for a wife who can help protect his blind sister from their cousin if anything happens to Seth but his attention is taken from that hunt by his mystery lady, whom he names Aurora. When Jane goes to Vauxhall dressed as Aurora to see Seth they take themselves into a secluded area and have one night together.

Seth has also discovered that Jane Spencer is in town for the season and his sister, Julianne, has reconnected with her. Seth has some strange feelings of yearning towards Jane but feels bad about them because of his obsession with Aurora. When Jane gives him some shocking news Seth has to learn whether he can trust her, love her and whether he can allow Julianne to grow up and make her own decisions.

This was an easy read and, with a large font size and more than average leading, was much quicker to read than the page count of 350 would suggest. However it was a sweet enough story, about two childhood friends rediscovering each other as adults, finding their friendship again despite the things that have happened to them both in the years that they were separate.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Night With You 26 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Originally published at The Rookie Romance Blog.

Ok, so this book had me at the blurb. It's got lots of different things working for it- childhood friends, a bit of unrequited love and a disguised identity.

Jane and Seth were best friends as children, but she always loved him, unfortunately he falls for her shallow sister. She never sees him after he is thrown out of her home for trying to propose to Madeline. Jane is married off to a boor of a husband, and eventually is widowed. She's forced to live with her in-laws who are determined to make Jane a servant in her own home. Desperate for freedom, Jane attends a masquerade where she has a passionate reunion with Seth....except he doesn't know who this mysterious woman is.

Jane is quite proper and a bit timid, but she yearns to live her own life and be out in society again. I loved seeing Jane's backbone really develop throughout the book, by the end she is determined to have a happy life and live for herself. The real Jane comes out throughout as well, and you can see how vulnerable she is, but also how passionate and strong. I was definitely rooting for her from the start, especially considering how horrible her brother-in-law is! I also loved Jane's friends, I was so glad they were there for her.

Seth has been burned in the past by Madeline, Jane's sister, so he's cynical and more than a bit bitter. His sister Julianne was blinded in a riding accident with Seth when they were younger, Seth blames himself and feels a huge burden of guilt. He's determined to marry a woman who will have Julianne's best interests at heart if anything ever happened to him. When he meets 'Aurora' at the masquerade, he's stunned to feel the intense attraction between them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet, unassuming Regency romance 15 July 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
Widowed Lady Jane Guthrie is fed up with her family treating her like a servant and longs to have just one night of freedom. With the help of her friends, she dons the most daring gown and manages to sneak to a scandalous courtesans' masquerade ball. While there, she comes face to face with Seth Rutledge, her childhood friend and the man who broke her heart all those years ago by choosing her beautiful, title-hungry sister over her. But now, with a mask to conceal her identity, Seth definitely wants only Jane.

Just back from war and new to a title he never expected to inherit, Seth is entranced by the masked beauty before him and vows to reveal all her secrets. Determined to marry for duty alone, passion is something that Seth has no place for in his life. But he can't help but want the mysterious woman before him, possibly for more than just one night. But what will happen when he realises that his masked love is none other than his childhood friend Jane?

This was an unassuming and invariably sweet Regency romance and another winner from Sophie Jordan.

The plot of two childhood friends that come together and re-learn what they feel for each other captured me and I was eager to keep reading to find out what happened to the characters. Jane is uncomplicated and fresh - someone you might not necessarily relate to but certainly will root for. Seth too was an interesting hero. Slightly brooding and dark but with the tender streak I like in a leading male. I have to admit that I didn't really understand his motivations at times but that didn't really spoil the story for me.
