There is nothing here as outrageously avant-garde or ebullient as Parliament's spectacular Flashlight and in general, this album's subdued tone makes it more soul-funk than rock-funk. Besides the title track on the one nation getting down just for the funk of it, I really love Groovallegiance with its lovely harmonies, interweaving voices, hypnotic melody and the subtle way it insinuates itself into the brain-grooves: "Let me take you by the hand/ And spread the funk across the land/ It's not hard to understand/ Heading for the master plan/ Pledge a groovallegiance to the funk/ The United Funk of Funkadelica/ Oh yea-hoo/ Dey do do do da funk/ Do da funk-de ee de dee!" I love the whole P-funk culture and especially Clinton's playful and witty socio political commentary. Seeing this band, or preferably the whole Parliafunkadelicment-thang live, must have been a memorable experience!

It,s not likely that a band,s tenth studio album will be their best but there can be little argument that the 1978 album One Nation Under A Groove by Funkadelic saw the band reach the pinnacle of their career. A loose concept album about the power of funk to make people happier and more open minded with the added benefit of making then dance like loons on hot coals One Nation Under a Groove is the bands most lauded( rightly) and commercially successful album ( rightly too)
This is the first Funkadelic album to feature keyboard player and songwriter Walter "Junie" Morrison" and his contribution is vital to the albums groovalicious ambience. The album is widely acknowledged as being massively influential , though whether that's always been a good thing is open to debate. Either way it,s not Funkadelic,s fault if second rate copyists latched on to their sound and perspicacious fusion of genres
The album is a heady concoction of glossy P-funk, heavy duty harmonics, scatological socio-political lyrics complete with cross-genre quirks. The title track is the most straight up funk track , an absolute classic of the genre but "Groovallegiance" integrates a a hint of reggae while "Who Says A Funk Band Can,t Play Rock?!" as the title infers is a funk/rock hybrid. The bassline is undiluted funk but the guitars and percussion carry a true rock crunch. The downside of innovation like this is risible copyists like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers who unfortunately become all pervasive. The wonderfully titled "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis" Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)" is a satire comparing the dumbing down of global culture with errr toilets. "Into You" is the albums reflective pause, a virtual R&B ballad , though much better than most R&B ballads. "Cholly" (Funk Getting Ready To Roll)" and "Lunchmeatphobia(Think It Ai,nt Illegal Yet)" are more straight down the middle funk -though obviously filtered through George Clinton,s colourful elliptical world view.
For all it,s serious undertones this album is enjoyable on a purely hedonistic level .One Nation Under A Groove is one of the great genre specific albums but it,s also an album whose lavish grooves and tunes are underpinned by real intelligence, something that previously seemed only the province of more (supposedly ) serious musicians . It gives you something to think about while making you want to move like an eel in a tumble dryer. In other words it has everything you could possibly want from music , or indeed art.

Funkadelic's Most Commercially Successful Album!! 29 July 2009
By HE WHO FUNKS BEHIND THE ROWS!! - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
When this album came out in the late summer of 1978,
it was highly anticipated because P-Funk was selling
out concert arenas all over the country, as well as
saturating black radio with plenty of good-n-funky product!
There was "Flashlight" (Parliament), "Bootzilla"
(Bootsy's Rubberband), "Disco To Go" (The Brides Of
Funkenstein), all released earlier that year and all
were big hits! Then, the single for the title track
"One Nation Under A Groove" came out in June or July
of '78, and it was unlike anything that had ever been
heard up to that time! It was an immediate house party,
block party and skating rink / dance floor filler!
A bunch of lesser funk bands of the day tried to come
out with their own copycat spins on this song.
(The Barkays "Move Your Boogie Body", Raydio "Hot Stuff"
and "For Those Who Like To Groove", and Herbie Hancock's
"Ready Or Not" to name a few!)

The other highlights of this album were: "Groovalliegence",
"Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock",
"Cholly (Funk Gettin' Ready To Roll!)" and
Michael "Kidd Funkadelic" Hampton's scorching live
rendition of the early Funkadelic psychedelic-rock
classic "Maggot Brain", which was first played by
the late great Eddie "Maggot Brain" Hazel in 1971,
and has since become as essential to rock guitarists
as "Stairway To Heaven", "Kashmir" or
"Runnin' With The Devil" is!

**Honorable Mention** goes to the song
"P.M.S.B.W.P.E. Squad (The D.D. Chasers)" (LOL!!)
I love the laid back funky acid rockish groove with
Garry Shider's soulful vocal adlibs in the backdrop,
completely juxtaposed against George Clinton's insane
call & response rant about the BS, mental gamesmenship,
phony & silly social conventions and other societal
restraints which Clinton puts (quite literally!)
into scat-a-logical terms! (-:
"Think!!--It Ain't Illegal Yet! " Indeed...

"Into You" is mellow funk that you just laid back,
fired up a jizzle and grooved to!
New-comers to the P-Funk, who think in linear and
logical terms will not understand Clinton's symbolisms
and seemingly nonsensical approach to lyric writing,
but there was definitely a message within all that madness!--
You just have to free your mind... and you know the rest! (-:
The groove is inevitable though!--If you can't feel it,
then check your local morgue, because you're probably dead! (-:
Enjoy the funk kidz!

Excellent Funkadelic CD 23 Jun 2009
By Terand - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I could not believe some unfunky kinda UFO here from the sun rated this excellent CD only 4 stars. This CD rocks with the lengthy guitar solo "Maggot Brain" and funks with "One Nation Under A Groove ." "Here's your chance to dance your way out of your constrictions." It's worth buying just for those two songs alone; and the rest of the tracks are very good on their own merit. I first bought this on vinyl back in 1978 or 1979, and I consider it a classic funk album.

Under a Groove 8 Jan 2010
By Calvin B. Miles - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Under the groove influence is where you'll be, listening to these jams. You got "Bootsy" yeah right, you got George Clinton, unhuh, you got Walter " Junie" Morrison, oh yeah, you got Gary Shider aka Diaper Man, ooh he's so crazy, you got them "Horny Horns". Just to name a few of the monsters in this band. How can you not be under a groove?

Oh yeah, oh yeah !!The Boys with the Noise, hitting on all cylinders. Rocking, and Jocking, like they do, it's true. It's the bomb exploding again, breaking musical notes in like a virgin.

Come take a drink, let your mind rethink what it knows about funk, then put it in your trunk, let it funk'em again for the first time. Oh, you thought it would be a typical review? How uncool, listen up people this is where you get your second helping of the funk.

These tracks, all of them, were designed to blow your mind. They blew mine that's for sure. A fan for life. Buy this disc, it's the mother ship without the plastic.
