Powerful 17 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a collection of powerful stories about the experience of separation and alienation that comes from displacement. Many have emigrated to New York from the former Soviet Union. Krasikov's characters struggle to maintain some relationships at long distances, and to form new ones in their new homes. The stories form a sensitive and often powerful exploration of the human consequences of people's unprecedented mobility. They are well written and evocative. As with many writers at the beginning of their career, Krasikov's range is limited by her tendency to write from personal experience. Nonetheless, this collection shows that she has a great deal of skill and potential to develop in the future.

A taste of Russia 15 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
These stories are individual little sweets. Unwrap one at a time and savour them. They are exquisitely written, little portions of immigrants' lives; often heartbreaking. This author is definitely one to watch. There are no huge events or great denouements, only visits from relatives, conversations, moments, snapshots of relationships; but that recipe is sometimes the best for the most simple and effective stories. I recommend this book and look forward to more from this author.

By kingg VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I can't remember the last book of short stories I enjoyed - I typically find them too shallow and uninvolving to hold my attention. Sana Krasikov's stories are special, however. The stories draw you in by sparking an initial interest in the characters and then gradually revealing key character details, events, and emotions, as the story unfolds. I found many of the stories moving, particularly in their final poignant moments, where you are left questioning the complexities of the character relationships and wondering where they'll end up.

I'd recommend this book.

Powerful, relevant story-telling
This collection of short stories reveals much about the immigrant state of mind. In doing so it goes a long way to explaining the curious state of modern American culture.
