5.0 out of 5 stars very gripping and realistic story 3 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Not only the crime story but also the details around about the english way of living and how people jsut lie you straight in the face in order not to be rude or the description of the still WWII marked coastline, the way of living of english people in the forgotten little towns, the awful housing in England everywhere and the way they choose to live in their run down houses and then in contrast these upcoming people in their even worst new houses. All the social part of this book made it very enjoyable and confirms my view english culture is about 20years behind of what's 'standard' or normal nowerdays in the world, especially after having had these experiences on my own in the last years over here. I can very much relate to it. Good story, a character with a past, an unfortunate now, but most probably a not so bad future...but read for yourself. Took me 3 days only to finish this book, and enjoyed it a lot!

4.0 out of 5 stars Essex noir -- who knew? 24 Feb 2011
By Kemlo
Format:Kindle Edition
Twelve years ago Nick Redpath's mom died, and as an orphan he was shuffled around various homes. Now he's back to visit his hometown of Bathside, Essex. Soon he begins running into the kids he used to know at school, only now of course they're grown up with their own lives and liaisons; most traumatic for Nick of these re-encounters is with Jerry, the girl he adored from afar when they were both adolescents, now a doped-up, adulterous femme fatale. Only this time it's the femme fatale who winds up being the murder victim, with Nick -- in true noir style -- the prime suspect.

There are twists and turns galore before finally the murder is solved, and in the interim we're offered plenty of neat insights into the hypocrisies and vulnerabilities that oil the wheels of social life in small towns that have somehow been left a few years behind by the world, and aware that the gap could be widening. The characterizations are vivid, and in a couple of cases really quite affecting; the taut tale-telling rattles along at good speed; and the solution to the mystery is both startling and satisfying. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars small town - revisited - never the same 14 Feb 2012
By Jules Nichols - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This noir set in Essex was quite a surprise. I thought the main character, Nick, was easy to identify with, and his perseverance admirable. I appreciated the twists and turns of the mystery and finding the killer (oh, spoiler, someone dies!!) and the overall idea of going 'back home' never being what you think it will be.
