'an intimate, thoughtful novel celebrating women's friendship and loyalty to each other. It is also a moving, subdued reflection on how we survive traumatic events.'
--Waterstone's Books Quarterly

'Carried along by the momentum of a suspense-filled yet touching story that drives to the core of human emotion, this book is a real page-turner, exploring the harrowing pain of loss and grief, family secrets and how a tragic event can force you to be honest about who you really are. You'll want to inhale it in one breath.' --Easy Living

**** 'Top 5 Must-Read. A great, quirky thriller with a heart for fans of Kate Atkinson.' --Red Magazine

'In plain, everyday prose, Rayner skilfully lays bare a story of loss, secrets and lies, family and the enduring friendships between women . . . Life-affirming and insightful.' --New Books Magazine

`One Moment, One Morning is on our spring reading list' --Elle Magazine

`Ostensibly a book about grief, One Moment, One Morning is ultimately uplifting.' --Brighton Argus

`There are books that grab your attention from the very beginning and never let it go. One Moment, One Morning is one of them. It is also one of those books that leaves a lasting impression and will linger at the back of your mind... A book hard to put down - even when reaching out for a tissue - and characters so credible and real that I found myself looking out for them on the streets of Brighton.'
--The Sussex Newspaper

5*
`a moving tale of loss and friendship' --Star magazine

`Rayner is a swift, efficient plotter nudging her characters towards the light of congruence and self-reliance. Her Brighton is carefully and affectionately mapped, and her account of the grueling rituals a death involves is deftly done.' --TLS

Product Description

The Brighton to London line. The 07:44 train. Carriages packed with commuters. A woman applies her make-up. Another occupies her time observing the people around her. A husband and wife share an affectionate gesture. Further along, a woman flicks through a glossy magazine. Then, abruptly, everything changes: a man has a heart attack, and can't be resuscitated; the train is stopped, an ambulance called. For at least three passengers on the 07:44 on that particular morning, life will never be the same again. Lou witnesses the man's final moments. Anna and Lou share a cab when they realise the train is going nowhere fast. Anna is Karen's best friend. And Karen? Karen's husband is the man who dies. Telling the story of the week following that fateful train journey, One Moment, One Morning is a stunning novel about love and loss, about family and – above all – friendship. A stark reminder that, sometimes, one moment is all it takes, it also reminds us that somehow, and despite everything, life can and does go on.

How lovely to read an excellent book from this particular genre that is set in the UK, rather in the US!

Imagine this scenario for a second. You get on your usual commuter train and settle down to `people watching' under the disguise of your i-pod. You watch the people around you. A woman applies her make-up; a couple show discreet signs of affection - life goes on around you; then, suddenly, disaster. A man sitting very close to you collapses and dies. How will this event affect you?

This book examines the effect of such event on the lives of three women; Lou, a counsellor in a London school who happened to be sitting near the victim when it happened; Karen, the wife if the dead man; and their friend, Anna.
The characters of this amazing book are extremely well drawn and the emotions and actions are so well drawn that I have to ask whether the author may have been writing from experience! Having lost my father a few years ago in a similarly sudden incident, I can emphasise fully to the emotions of the key characters - right down to the feelings of guilt.

This is a book that should appeal particularly to those who enjoyed PS, I Love You as well as readers of Jodi Picoult - with the added attraction that it is set in England!

I am very much looking forwards to finding more by this gifted author;' however, I must add one caveat. Don't try to read this if you have recently lost sa loved one in very sudden way. It may be too close to true feelings for comfort!

What a marvellous book!!
It touched my heart and soul, and had me laughing and crying at the same time, the story is simple : relating to the death of Simon and how it impacts on the life of his wife Karen her closest friend Anna and a bystander Lou, plus additional characters in their lives, within the week that follows , and then a few months afterwards, ending on a definate note of hope.

The characterisations were excellent , with both likeable and unlikeable people.
I felt it had been written from the heart by someone who knew and had been there, and as the book intimates , got through he other side and carried on, and how one brief moment is often all it takes to change your life in an instant.

A thoroughly good read that I devoured in 2 nights!

How refreshing to start reading a book that draws you in from page one and has the reader engaged and involved with the characters almost straight away.

We start on a journey that any one of us could be making on any given morning. The dreadful situation of watching something almost unthinkable occur could make for uncomfortable reading in less capable hands, but Sarah Rayner paints a realistic, yet sympathetic picture of events. She also captures the vivid colours and characters of Brighton and Hove, so for anyone who has ever lived, loved or laughed on these streets, it is a familiar landscape.

Beyond the initial, driving story though, is a wonderful tale of real friendship and genuine relationships, both established and new. I loved how an undeniably terrible turn of events leads to something special, without ever underestimating the power of grief, anger and all the other raw emotions that go hand in hand with loss. Our writer gives us plenty of reasons to laugh, too. An element so often lost in books dealing with death.

You don't have to be a direct replica of Lou, Anna, or Karen - the three, female protagonists - in order to empathise and relate to each of their circumstances.

Life does indeeed change in a heartbeat, and this ultimately uplifting novel says more about dealing with sudden change than any number of self-help guides.
