More About the Author

Julia Donaldson, the 2011-2013 Children's Laureate, is the outrageously talented, prize-winning author of the world's most-loved picture books including The Gruffalo and What the Ladybird Heard.

The Gruffalo, illustrated by Axel Scheffler, is now a children's classic and publishing phenomenon; celebrating 15 years in 2014, selling over 3 million copies worldwide, was voted Great Britain's favourite bedtime story on BBC Radio 2 and was adapted and broadcast as an animation on BBC 1 on Christmas Day 2009. The Gruffalo's Child and Room on the Broom are now also films, with Room on the Broom shortlisted for an Academy Award in 2014. Julia Donaldson's most recent books with Axel Scheffler include Superworm (2012), Highway Rat (2011), Tabby McTat (2010), Stick Man (2009) and Tiddler (2008).

Julia Donaldson has also published work with David Roberts, Nick Sharratt, Emily Gravett, Rebecca Cobb, and Lydia Monks. Her collaboration with Lydia Monks began in 2003, with the first collection of Princess Mirror-Belle stories. The fabulously glittery Sugarlump and the Unicorn is their sixth, and most recent, picture book collaboration. She also writes poems, plays, songs and fiction for older children and, together with her husband Malcolm, has performed her wonderful stage shows all over the world.

Book Description

All the animals are busy lending a hand in the garden in this lively numbers book! The parrots are pulling up carrots, the bears are picking pears and a swarm of bees are pruning the trees with their miniature shears. Julia Donaldson’s whimsical rhymes and Nick Sharratt’s hilarious illustrations make this book a delight to share out loud. With plenty to giggle at on every page, counting – or gardening – has never been so much fun! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

My little boy is just over 18 months and this is one of his favourites - he loves the butterflies and looking for the snail, in particular! We've also now got him saying "uh-oh" when we get to the fox dropping the tomatoes - very funny! He also love the Hippo in the Hat which is great for learning about animals and clothes.

This book is currently on its 5th consecutive renewal from our local library. It is a huge hit with my nearly 2 year old and we read it every night before bed.

Every 2 page spread has a number (from 1 to 10) with the digit, the written number and a simple rhyme on the left hand page which matches the picture on the right hand page. For example there are '2, two snakes with garden rakes', or '10, ten bees pruning trees'. Each of the rhymes are very amusing and beautifully illustrated. The final double page spread has a detailed picture with all of the animals on it.

When I read it with my son, I trace the number with my finger, count the number of animals and then read the rhyme, so he hears each number 3 times, and sees it as a word, a digit, and sees / hears me counting them. This is such great exposure to counting and numbers.

I highly recommend this book.

This is another great book by that fantastic partnership - Julia Donaldson and Nick Sharratt. My two grandsons love all their books and this is a particular current favourite with the three year old. Super rhymes and fun images. A great buy.

We're collecting all the Julia Donaldson but was disappointed with this one, if your looking for a counting to ten book then this is fine but I assumed it was about a mole digging a hole but it's not.

My 3 year old grandson was not interested in this book. I think he has grown out of this type of publication. Probably suitable to a younger age group. He usually loves Julia Donaldson titles.
