Product Description

Product Description

When Valentine Low decided to forego his world of dinner parties with the chattering classes to take on a pastime usually indulged in by old men with flat caps and rollups, he had little idea of the sea change it would bring about in his life. A year down the line he had developed a worrying obsession with potatoes, a resourcefulness that borders on kleptomania and an ever-strengthening relationship with a cheery Irishman named Michael (who thinks that zeitgeist is something nasty you get on your cucumbers). By turns entertaining and informative, and packed with allotment wisdom -- everything from who was responsible for the desecration of the purple sprouting broccoli (that'll be the pigeons) to how to build a proper manure heap -- One Man and His Dig is an indispensable guidebook for all green-fingered urbanites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well dug, 19 May 2008
I've just taken on an allotment and chanced across this book...and I devoured it in one sitting. It's a wise and witty account of the author's cultivation of his London allotment, together with a light sprinkling of the history of allotments. Highly recommended - and the book is now doing the rounds on my allotment site.

I have had an allotment for 2 years and still learn something new everyday.I found this book to be a bit of a slow starter but once it got going it really did make me laugh out loud. You share the ups and Downs, success and disasters with the author as you read, described in great detail. It was a book i couldn't put down,i thoroughly enjoyed reading it,The recipes in it are great too and they really do taste as good as he made out.A must have for the book shelf.

considering that valentine low is my uncle this book is full to the broom with amusing facts, interesting stories and plenty of courage for those gardeners out there. Like myself i am growing an allotment, because of this book it has given me the courage to dig, plant and grow many vegetables. So any gardeners out there who may want to start digging, bring this book with you to your allotment!

Very well written as one would expect from a Fleet Streeter, a little short on the details but nevertheless entertaining

Very good written in a quirky and easy to follow style, not quite what I was expecting but a nice relaxed informative way of writing. I have really enjoyed reading it.
