Biography

From Loudon:

After the War (II) my father Loudon (II) came home with his bride Martha (I).1 My parents had sex and nine months later I was born albeit almost backwards.2

My youth was spent in Westchester County, New York and Beverly Hills, California.3 I remember being particularly happy when we lived in Southern California.4 However there was romantic agony - I had a tremendous ... Read more in Amazon's Loudon Wainwright III Store

Not much more to say, except that having bought this you should then go out and find the rest of his albums. Deceptively simple, yet at times searingly honest, his work is free of overblown imagery, and doesn't make you feel that you are too old to be listening to it. Smart songs, written with emotional depth, and a wry sense of humour. Highly recommended.

This album is like an old friend - it's good for a laugh and a shoulder to cry on. Loudon shares the funny side of his talent "Acid Song", and the wistful side, "Your Mother and I". He gets a little blusy and funky on "I'm All Right", but overall it's just, one man, one guitar and a bunch of great songs.

This is a superb CD. At first I was a bit disappointed. Then one track grew on me, then another and another. Now, there's only about three or four I'm not too keen on. My favourite tracks are Cardboard Boxes and Synchronicity. He has a unique style. I cannot remember hearing any other singer who sings such autobiographical songs. He has a great flair for words and a good voice too.

Loudon is the best.

I saw him in York, England a few months back, and he was the best i have ever seen.

This man knows his craft!

This album is a lovely introduction to the varied sounds of Loudon Wainwright. Personal favorites are 'IDTTYWLM', utterly superb. 'Martha' is sweet, 'One Man Guy' typically bitter enough to be a Loudon great song. Really all these songs on this album are amazing.

I can't convey just how good Loudon is. I only hope you buy this album and more to find out!

This is far from up to date, but still demonstrates perfectly why Wainwright matters so much to us all. Deceptively simple music accompanies lyrics to die for. Subject matters veer wildly from hilarity to brutally honest and self-critical tear jerkers, but all songs have something to say. This is certainly an excellent album. It's far from definitive given it's age, and also the narrow time period covered. But it's absolutely typical of Wainwright's ouvre, and is an excellent price for a collection of just some of a great songwriter's work. Difficult to pick highlights from the 21 gems included. A great place to start for the Loudon novice, and if you like folk and blues music, written with a tear in one eye and a laugh in the other, then maybe it's time you dipped your toe into Wainwright waters...

This man has been on my radar since I first saw and heard him as Spalding in M.A.S.H. He is witty, original, and with an edge which is deceptively sharp. His life is in the songs and he is one hundred per cent genuine.
One Man Guy encompasses Loudon Wainwright's divorce, the pain of eating alone in restaurants, through all sorts of witty observations and including a tribute to John Lennon. This is a CD with bite. If you like real,spicy,bitter-sweet music about a real person with real talent - don't miss out - buy it NOW.

I took a chance when I bought this as I had not heard much previously, but it is ok, easy to listen to folk rock style. Loundon appears to sing stories in the way he writes his music, I appreciate that this is a few years old now but I like it. I has made me buy tickets to see him in concert. Mind you I am in my 50s now, my 17 year old son is not a fan, such is life.

Well, what can you say about Louden Wainwright 111? If you know his past history you'll know that he is at the very least unique but at the other end of the scale a accomplished songwriter and performer. Great songs from a career littered with unappreciated classics ('Dead Skunk', is not on here. Why?). A great starter album for the unititiated and curious and a reasonable catch up for the long term fan, although a double would have been better suited to a true show-case of the best of his previous material.
