Biography

Blues legend B.B. King had been spending recent years thinking about "The B.B. King That Was." There is his bricks, mortar and memory project down in a Mississippi blues crossroads, his very own B.B. King Museum, which acknowledges his past. And then, his new Geffen Records CD One Kind Favor which puts the blues maestro in competition, not with other players, but himself. "The ... Product Description

B.B. King has won 14 GRAMMY awards and recorded over 150 albums during his 60 year plus career. He is one of the greatest and most respected blues guitarists of all time. One Kind Favor is a mixture of old blues covers from King’s early influences. Produced by Grammy Award winner T-Bone Burnett (O Brother Where Art Thou, Walk The Line, The Big Lebowski), the album recaptures much of the spirit and sound of B.B. King’s early recordings, complete with rich horn-section blasts, vintage-style tube distortion on the vocals and boogie-woogie piano.

Look folks I was going to buy this out of pure nostalgia anyway - but I have to tell you this is just about as good as it gets - definitely his best ever studio recording. The voice is as good as ever, and no one ever ever could get the same sounds out of a guitar as he gets out of "Lucille". Every track a winner and what a band - featuring the incomparable Dr John on piano. The production is faultless. If you have any affection for the blues you simply have to buy this. Without question a 5 star item.

B.B.King maybe now in his eighties,he may sit down to play these days on stage but I'll tell you what,he's still the king of the blues and that's not just in his name. This album, produced by T Bone Burnette ( who produced the Robert Plant/Alison Krauss multi- award winning album last year)is a collection of blues classics never before recorded by BB.This is a totally wonderful album, and may well go down as one of his best albums ever. He's in top form throughout, with a band that includes Dr. John and Jim Keltner T-Bone has brought a truly classic album out, produced with a classic 50's blues sound, yet with a pure and beautiful sound balance throughout. This is an album no true blues or should I say music fan should miss.Without doubt blues album of the year if not one of the great blues albums of all time.I played this to my son who thinks it's really great that sums it up...a truly great album.

I bought this particular cd on the strength of some of the press reviews - which suggested that it was BBk' best for some while.

Its good, and worth having in your collection , if your a fan - but oddly I find it a bit too stripped down and all the tracks are a wee bit samey. It almost sounds like theve found a BPM and worked the whole album around that...

3.5 Stars ........Good - but not great

Mind you - for a man in his 80's its pretty sensational. One Kind Favor

The contemporary blues album by the 'old guard' of untouchable blues musicians is, sadly, often a mixed bag. For example, and believe me, I absolutely love Buddy Guy, but I'd wish he'd record an album without 1001 guest stars.

Fortunately, B.B King shows them all how it's done. Similar in vibe and feel to Solomon Burke's (equally brilliant) "Don't Give Up On Me", this record is a joy right from the start. In T Bone Burnett, King has a producer who knows exactly what's needed to nail the right sound, song after song. Couple that with Jim Keltner on drums, Dr John on keys and Nathan East on bass and you have the backing-band from heaven - because they know exactly what to play without overshadowing King. The arrangements are classic, and the musicianship is impressive.

And as for Blues Boy? Rest assured, firing on all cylinders. There's a ton of wonderful guitar playing here, which is as glorious and impassioned as ever. In that regard he stands alone. Equally, the vocals as deep as always; warm, rich and forever commanding.

This is a lovely album, with some very well chosen classic songs (highlights are "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" and "Sitting On Top Of The World" for my money). It's the coolest blues album in ages, and well worth checking out.

In a world of media blandness where the words genius or legend are often over used and subsequently under valued, in this case those words are fully justified. Speaking as a life long fan of the blues, this latest release from BB King could only be the product of a legend. The album has the feel of a musician taking the time to explore ideas and standards old and new and the result is superb. I found this album genuinely moved me at times and left me wanting more. This album has the potential to spread the blues word to the mainstream in the same way the John Lee Hooker acheived with 'The Healer' almost 20 years ago.

Any music fan should have this in their collection it is that good. This album is the sound of a man still at the top of his craft, pulling off licks that only a man with his prolific experience and output can muster. Couple this with a superb legend laden backing band and the much spoken about clean honest production and this album can only be five stars.

Very much the elder statesman of the Blues, 'One Kind Favor' (hate the American spelling of 'Favour'!) is as fine an album as the great BB has ever produced. Impassioned vocals, tasty lead guitar, sympathetic production from T-Bone Burnett and a great studio band conspire to produce a very satisfying album of classic Blues. Age hasn't withered King's guitar and vocal delivery; in his eighties he may be, but he can still summon up the appropriate fire and gutsiness that the music requires. The tone and feel reminds me of Bob Dylan's latest recordings; an old-school blues sound and atmosphere that is pure Bluesy classicism, but there is not a spare note or lack of commitment by all concerned. It's the purest of enjoyment all the way, and the listener gets the sense that BB King hasn't finished with The Blues, and vice versa. Don't bother reading this when you could be listening to 'One Kind Favor' - it gets my recommendation all the way. Blues you most definitely can use.
