Product Description

Product Description

In the sixteenth century, Japanese monks developed the haiku, a poem consisting of three unrhymed lines of five, seven and five syllables. Now, in "The Loose Canon", David Bader applies this ancient poetic form to "100 Great Books". From Homer to Milton to Dostoyevsky, the entire literary canon is finally within reach of even the shortest attention spans. The formal requirements of the haiku have, admittedly, necessitated a few cuts, such as characters, plot, dialogue and descriptive passages. Still, these are small sacrifices in view of the huge savings in time and shelf space. Avoid eyestrain and deforestation and show off your literary prowess at parties. It's the perfect gift for today's busy reader.

About the Author

Occasionally inspired 13 Dec 2005
Format:Hardcover
It’s a bit of a frivolous exercise, attempting to encapsulate 100 great novels into seventeen syllables each but it is good fun.

The haiku are often just OK but occasionally they are simply inspired. Most of the haiku made me smile but some had me roaring with laughter. As a test, I read a number of the haiku to colleagues: the reaction was much the same – most elicited smiles but some were greeted with hoots of laughter.
Interestingly, different people found different haiku funny. I suspect that one’s enjoyment of this book is determined by one’s familiarity with the books used as the basis for the haiku. Most of the books are well known (even if they are not all widely read) and most readers should be familiar with the majority.

A good present and a couple of hours of entertainment.

The soul of wit 27 Jun 2011
Format:Hardcover
This is a VERY funny book and one which made me and lots of very literate friends laugh out loud. Some of the haikus really do encapsulate the essence of long, classical works, others comment on the pretentiousness which surrounds them. My particular favourite is his haiku version of Gibbon's Decline and Fall.... Don't read this in public as loud laughter can look like insanity.
