What an extraordinary high-risk business the film world is! This book gives a remarkably detailed insider's view. Michael Kuhn took his music-industry experience into the film world, and was very successful - he made happen films like Four Weddings and A Funeral - but that proved no guarantee of long-term existence in an industry where personal likes and dislikes and mere misfortune can play such a large part. The film business comes out of this entertaining book as controlled gambling - controlled as much as possible, certainly, but still very high-risk. It takes a certain sort of person and organisation to play with such high stakes, and this is one of the best books around at providing an insight into this lesser-known aspect of the apparently glamorous film world. Indeed, it may be the only one to provide such clear actual examples. Most informative about the financial nitty-gritty, but also strong on anecdotes, and well written - without any rancour, although the author might be entitled to feel a bit hard-done-by. Recommended.

Fascinating 16 Sep 2008

I found this a fascinating peek into the world of movie making but also a disturbing confirmation of the sometimes flippant decisions taken at the top of gigantic corporations. Very clearly and concisely written with some interesting vigenettes of key players in the film world.

Excellent Treatise on the Business of Filmmaking 12 Jun 2009
By Rodney Parnther - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is one of the better books about professional filmmaking as a business. The perspective is that of a Hollywood outsider (former European music powerhouse Polygram) trying to break into the domain of the major studios in North America and around the globe. It is a cautionary tale of the successes, setbacks and ultimate failure to sustain a European-based major studio. The book is a fun read as Kuhn describes his many encounters with Hollywood celebrities both performers and moguls. Behind all of the tales, however, lies a great blueprint for any newcomers looking to gain entry into the business.
