4.0 out of 5 stars One from the heart for the cognoscenti, 31 Dec 2001
This review is from: One from the Heart [VINYL] (Vinyl)
within the waits' oeuvre, this marks the segue from barfly poet boozehound seventies waits to the bonecracking-ensemble howling-brandisher of the eighties and into the nineties, belonging though firmly with the former piano based works. if you know 'i never talk to strangers' on 'foreign affairs' then you know tommo's gift for penning tunes for the female speakeasy range, and here we get this and more as crystal gayle's smoothery palpates breathily with tom's heartfelt growl on the title track and others, and elsewhere on her naked own. it is an album studded with standout tracks that don't stand out, with the instrumentals cohering rather than intruding as the piece vibrates a mood of more darkly elated pathos than the smoky ballbreaking of 'blue valentine' or the whiskey wise 'small change'. but conscience compels the illusion of honesty, and so the conclusion must be that ALBEIT a fine wine album in its own right, it is not anywhere near the most essential waits' albums, and so, in the unjustness of our consumer culture, may only be of strictest relevance to the waits' connoisseur. but i think it's great.
