Product Description

Praise for "One Big Happy Family: ""This collection of tender stories and photos describes surprising interspecies relationships, many involving an adult predator suppressing its instinct to kill and taking on a parental role when exposed to an orphaned or abandoned baby animal that would ordinarily be its prey. ... Rogak's prose is buttressed by adorable pictures of the animals from different species snuggling or cuddling with each other. Impressively, the animals actively sought out the younger creatures in need. The stories exemplify the maxim that truth is stranger than fiction, and even if these incidents mark the exception rather than the rule, animal lovers of all ages will enjoy the book." --"Publishers Weekly ""This book 'sells' itself. It gathers 50 stories of animals of one species mothering (or, in several cases, fathering) babies from an entirely foreign species. The instinct to nurture young is almost universal, and, as these stories demonstrate, that instinct can sometimes trump the instinct to stay within one's own kind. ... Illustrated with irresistible color photos, this one is a charmer." --"Booklist ""Lisa Rogak in "One Big Happy Family" treats us to short but sweet stories of animals caring for animals of other species." --"Animal People ""Every page is an 'Awww!' moment, with surprising stories of interspecies adoption and friendships (the Dalmatian and her spotted sheep, the Labrador and her bunnies, a kitty and baby chicks - you get the idea) and accompanying photos ... Truly a book to make you happy, happy, happy." --TheDenverChannel.comPraise for "Dogs of Courage" "This is the perfect stocking-stuffer for the dog lover on your list." --"Hudson Valley News""A celebration of the many ways service dogs help humans. . . . Will give dog enthusiasts plenty of reinforcement for the assertion that dogs are man's best friend." --"Kirkus Reviews""Lisa Rogak delivers another excellent book! . . . If you're looking for a book full of feel-good stories - look no further. Rogak will warm your heart with her numerous 'tails' of canine heroism." --"The Examiner""An engrossing series of portraits of survival captured in a rich context of hope and heart that will leave you smiling and feeling richly nourished." --Seattle Kennel ClubPraise for "The Dogs""of War" "A book that will fascinate dog lovers and lovers of the military...It's inspiring and beautifully written." --"The Examiner"""The Dogs of War" documents the real-life valor of canine warriors. Rogak is to be commended for the book's encyclopedic scope and rich historical detail." --"The Washington Post ""Canine heroism is eloquently celebrated in Lisa Rogak's "The Dogs of War."" --"Hudson Valley News""Lisa Rogak's "The Dogs of War" sheds light on why the dog, more than any other animal, holds a special place in our history, and our hearts. The most comprehensive book I have ever read on the subject of military dogs, it exemplifies the indomitable spirit of the dog itself, ever selfless, loyal to a fault." --Steve Duno, author of "Last Dog on the Hill"

Everything that one would expect, and good for all ages 21 Oct. 2013
By fuzzy - Published on
Format: Paperback
If your eye was caught by the title and cover photo, you won't be disappointed in the contents of the book. Full of beautiful pictures and fun stories, the book is even done in a soothing color scheme that makes it live up to its promise all the more, and it is hard not to notice some of the characteristics of one's own relatives in the stern chicken mother looking over her Rottweiler puppies, or the calm Labrador Retriever father trying to ignore the antics of his duckling. With so many individual stories, chances are, you'll find something that looks a lot like your family here...

One nice thing is that most of the animals will be familiar (and appealing) to younger children, so it is an easy book to share with kids of all ages. I have found that this is not so much the case with some books of this type, where the pairings can seem sort of bizarre, and it is especially nice given the fact that children will obviously connect with the subject matter of families. There is also a subtle message of inclusion and acceptance in the book that I think is good for kids to hear, and relevant to the times we live in.

I will definitely be gifting some copies of this book this year.

A solid shot of warm fuzzies! 7 Jan. 2014

Come on, how can you not love this book? Tales of animals taking care of one another, even when paired in unlikely mixes? Good stuff.

As the owner a German Shepherd, I particularly loved the story of the Shepherd and her adopted kittens.

Great compilation!

Made my family happy 21 Dec. 2013
By dana kabel - Published on
Format: Paperback
My wife brought this amazing book home from the library to read to our 5 year old. The stories collected here are well written and inspiring true accounts of animals that have taken the task of mothering orphaned animals from other species.

I have enjoyed reading these incredible stories for myself as well as for my daughter, who clings to every word even though there is only one picture per story.

It's rare to find something like this that provides enjoyment for everyone in the family. I highly recommend this amazingly entertaining and educational book to any reader.

Animal Lovers Delight 14 Feb. 2014
By Spudman - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Here's a compilation of stories featuring uncommon and unexpected animal pairings - canine and feline, fur and feather, predator and prey. Each one demonstrates the instinct to nurture or seek the comfort of companionship. Many of these stories take place at zoos or animal rescue centers where there is opportunity for different species to meet and interact.

A large number of the examples take place in England, and many feature dogs or cats. Each story is accompanied by a photograph, most of them heartwarming or awwwww eliciting. One of my favorites is that of the springer spaniel holding a bottle of milk in its mouth to feed a lamb. Be aware that the "stories" are short and better described as anecdotes, vignettes, or articles. The briefness of each example allows the author to include fifty "stories". Those seeking stories with more depth, detail, and background might be disappointed. Young readers will appreciate the briefness of each story and the readability of the book.

This is a wonderful collection of stories about unlikely match ups of animals taking care of each other. It is a must for animal lovers of all shapes and sizes. People can learn a lot from the innocence and purity in the hearts of our pets. As a new dog owner, I LOVED it! Wonderful for bedtime reading for little ones too.
