Very few books have ever been published that seriously examine women's erotica (anything that displays men erotically in a context specifically for women), although we all think we know many 'facts' about this. Ever heard the adage that Playgirl is mainly read by gay men? And yet if you research this supposed 'fact', you'll find that Playgirl's management have never said this. Doesn't mean it's not true, just that there's no evidence to support this widely held belief.
Dr Smith's 'One for the girls' is a similarly myth-busting look at how readers of the British magazine For Women, published for some 14 years up until approximately 2000, felt about its contents. What emerges is little to support the popularly held belief that these magazines tend to disappear because 'women aren't visual', but that managerial decisions are a more likely cause of their demise.
A must for anyone interested in seriously examining questions like why there is so little 'porn for women'.
