A TRIUMPHANT STORY OF COMBAT IN THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN

Johnny Kent grew up in Winnipeg and was bitten by the flying bug at an early age. He became the youngest licenced pilot in Canada when he was only seventeen. He grabbed experience and flying hours wherever and whenever he could and was constantly on the lookout for a career in flying. His chance came when he was offered a short service commission with the RAF in the 1930s.

He went on to become the leader of one of the most successful fighter squadrons in the Second World War. Group Captain Johnny Kent's skilful leadership helped the famous 303 Squadron to play such a decisive part in the Battle of Britain, and won him the highest Polish military award, the Virtuti Militari.

This is Captain Kent's own story of his life in the RAF - from his struggles as a boy in the wilds of Canada to get into the air, through his experiences as a test pilot at Farnborough and his constant efforts be flying wherever the action was. It is a story of triumphant achievement in combat and of a man whose air force career certainly picked him out as 'One of the Few.' --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars He just can't get enough of flying! 4 Aug 2001
Format:Paperback
This is the autobiography of a Canadian who just cannot get enough of flying. He is already a proficient pilot by his late teens. To earn his keep, he goes on to fly in the RAF and eventually finds himself a test pilot and later, the CO of a Polish fighter squadron during the Battle of Britain. The Poles held a vendetta for Hitler and were more than a handful for him to control.
Perhaps the more interesting parts of his story are his test pilot exploits. He tells of his nerve-wrecking experience of testing with barrage balloons, where he flys, quite literally, into them and still manages to land his damaged craft for the scientists to inspect! Needless to say, losses in the test pilot squadrons are very high, but he survived to continue flying commercially after the war.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Few 27 July 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a fascinating account by Johnny Kent,a pilot who was at the heart of the Battle of Britain. It is a characteristically modest account of the extraordinary roles he played. His spell with the famous Polish 303 Squadron is particularly interesting. So, too, are later sections where he describes hazardous work as a test pilot.
This a classic, first-class book which I strongly recommend. David Stallard

4.0 out of 5 stars a business like account 30 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A very matter of fact style of writing. Very little emotion though it moves along quite sprightly, just a rather dry delivery. This is probably a feature of the mind set of a test pilot, sticking to the facts but with an absence of warmth. Its worth reading this book to get an alternative perspective on the story of 92 Squadron and then the reader can make up their own mind between Geoffrey Wellum's, Brian Kingcome's and Johnny Kent's version of events!
As I said it's a different style of writing which you either like or you don't, but never the less it's a good read and gives an interesting perspective on the times, the RAF and the WWII air battle from JK's experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Commander of 303 Squadron 19 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback
This is the story of Johnny "Kentowski", the Canadian who at first wished he had not been put in charge of a bunch of foreign flyers of unknown quality, but who suddenly found he was in command of the top of RAF squadron of the Battle of Britain.

Johnny Kent was a Canadian who loved flying, like the Polish pilots in his squadron. He was not badly off, when his squadron's officers wages were delayed he paid them out of his own pocket. When the RAF would only provide them with an lorry for transport he made his Personal Rolls Royce available. He went out of his way to learn Polish equivalent references for flying to enable him to communicate better with his pilots.

The squadron made an oustanding contribution to the Battle of Britain.
