Outlaw Rio (Marlon Brando) is betrayed by his partner Dad Longworth (Karl Malden) and sentenced to five years in a Mexican prison. When he escapes he has revenge on his mind and tracks Longworth down to a town in California, where Longworth has become the local sheriff! This is Brando s only directorial film, a position he took somewhat reluctantly replacing Stanley Kubrick after early shooting.

'One Eyed Jacks' is one of my all time favourite movies and I was delighted when I heard it was to get a long overdue DVD release. I was disappointed when I saw it was a Waterfall release. I have purchased two of their previous items, 'To Kill A Mockingbird' and 'The Stranger' and both were very poor in picture quality, especially 'To Kill..'. I was not surprised then to sit down to watch a third poor quality DVD from them. The picture is grainy and has lots of distortion during the action sequences and the sound is uite 'tinny'. A real shame because this a a fabtastic movie, ful of great character actors doing their very best and a bizarre lead performance from Brando that is mesmerising to watch. He wasn't a bad director too. The film looks great and deserves a 'special edition' release. Are you listening Paramount? I see another low price edition is due out in October, I hope this version will be better.

Certainly not Brando's best film, but the only one he directed, with some great acting from both Brando and the under-rated Carl Malden. This edition however, is so badly transferred - juddering pans, pixellated to the point that you can't even read the opening credits, terrible sound quality, compressed to hell - as to be intolerable. Avoid or you'll be disappointed and frustrated.

Any of you who read my review of the other edition of this film will know how poor i found the image to be on that one. I am happy to say that this version is better, not great, but a definite improvement on the Waterfall edition. The colours are a bit wishy-washy but the sound is quite good and there little distortion in the action sequences. The big plus is the trailer, a really strange one which I am sure didn't entice many people away from 'Gunsmoke' or whatever was on TV at the time. Strangely, the picture quality of the trailer is better that the movie itself !!!! This film definitely deserves the 'special edition' treatment because of it's fantastic cinematography and all the backstory that goes with it. It's a pity that most of the cast are dead (with the exceptions of Brando/Malden/Jurado), I am sure some good tales could be told.

Brando tour de force
Okay, the video transfer is not of the finest quality - I waited to buy until the previous distributor's poor effort had been replaced - but it's still very watchable. Read more

Scary!
Brando's only attempt at direction shows him as a short tempered, brooding and violent man. The seller was prompt in delivery and economical in pricing this item.

This was Marlon Brando's only foray into directing and one of his rare Westerns, so it's an unusual film from the start. Read more
