Amazon.co.uk Review

Fuelled by a scorchingly erotic performance from Isabelle Adjani, the ingeniously plotted One Deadly Summer spirals from provincial drama into a disturbing and complex psychological thriller, proving itself among the most under-rated of modern French films. In the hottest summer since Body Heat, Eliane (Adjani) and local mechanic Pin Pon (Alain Souchon) begin an affair then marry. From this starting point (a similar plot device to Chabrol's Le Boucher, 1969), life in a beautiful small town in Southern France begins to come apart. Under Jean Becker's direction every character is fully rounded, and the naturalistic tone adds considerably to the impact of an intense drama that offers the perfect showcase for Adjani, establishing once and for all what an extraordinarily accomplished actress she can be. Where Beatrice Dalle in Betty Blue was similarly erotically charged and mentally unstable, Eliane has a dark and obsessive agenda that anticipates the sexual psychosis of Basic Instinct. Combining an art-house love of the French countryside with more class than a dozen Hollywood erotic thrillers, One Deadly Summer is a striking vision of sex gone bad which builds to a shocking climax. It deserves to take its place as a modern classic. --Gary S Dalkin

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: French ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Photo Gallery, SYNOPSIS: In this tragic tale of misunderstanding, obsession, and increasing madness, 'she,' a beautiful young woman (Isabelle Adjani) settles into a small town in the south of France with her introverted mother (Maria Machado) and physically handicapped father and soon becomes the subject of wild speculation because of her aloofness and at the same time, her obvious sexuality. The young woman is actually caught up in the desire to avenge the long-ago rape of her mother, a rape committed by three Italian immigrants, one of whom is associated with a player piano. An attractive car mechanic (Alain Souchon) is enamored of her, and the woman suddenly sees him in a different light when she learns that his father, now dead, was an Italian immigrant who owned a player piano. Intent on taking action against the mechanic's family to right the wrong suffered by her mother, the daughter begins to lose her grip on sanity when she finds out that the men she suspects of the rape are actually innocent. In fact, her father long ago exacted his own vengeance on the three rapists. This knowledge pushes her over the edge, and she has to be institutionalized. Meanwhile, the young mechanic misunderstands what has happened and sets in motion events that cannot but lead to tragedy. L'Été Meurtier garnered four different Cesars in the 1983 competition: 'Best Actress' (Isabelle Adjani), 'Best Supporting Actress' (Suzanne Flon), 'Best Original Screenplay,' and 'Best Editing.' SCREENED/AWARDED AT: Cannes Film Festival, Ceasar Awards, ...One Deadly Summer ( L'Été meurtrier )

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible sensuality from Isablle Adjani, 6 Sep 2001
If you have not fallen for Adjani by the end of this file, check your pulse, you are probably dead! What seems like a bog standard 'boy meets girl, boy fancies girl, boy marries girl' film suddenly turns dark. The elaborate plot is taken along at a swift pace with superb acting throughout. The hilarious interaction between Adjani and the 'Mad' Grandmother, although short, stands out. This is a film that lingers in the memory not least for the erotically charged performance of Isabelle Adjani as she struts and pouts and schemes her way to revenge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Secrets and Lies!, 20 July 2008

Elodie (Swansea Valley, Wales) - See all my reviews
This review is from: One Deadly Summer [DVD] (DVD)
When the beautiful and provocative young Elle (performed brilliantly by Isabelle Adjani) flounces and pouts into a somnambulent Provencal village the inhabitants wake up with a start and stand to attention. Especially the menfolk. While we are all mesmerised by this dazzling creature with her cloud of dark hair and saphire blue eyes it is clear that she is not simply there for decorative purposes and things become ever more noir as the film develops.

The mistress of cunning and manipulation she sets a chain of negativity in motion, turning friend against friend and brother against brother. A convincing liar, she charms her way into the bosom of her boyfriend's family and proceeds to cause havoc and undoing. Given to explosive and unreasonable rages, her intentions are anything but honourable. As themes of vengance, insanity and murder take hold and we are dragged down the many twists and turns of the plot, nothing prepares us for the end.

This is an excellent thriller set in the 70s. Atmospheric, explosive and full of tension and suspense. The film was made in 1983 and in 1986 when 'Betty Blue' with Beatrice Dalle emerged, it had more than an echo of this film. If you enjoy thrillers this could be the one for you. Well worth viewing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aching beauty, 26 Dec 2005

This review is from: One Deadly Summer [DVD] (DVD)
I saw this film many years ago and it still holds wonderful images for me. The peerless beauty of Ms Adjani is matched by the horror of her character's childhood nightmare. Summer in France is breathtakingly photographed
