A collaborative project between Zack De La Rocha (vocalist of Rage Against The Machine) and Jon Theodore (drummer for countless alternative acts, most notably The Mars Volta until2006), One Day As A Lion takes its name from a photograph taken by George Rodriguez in 1970, containing the legend 'It's Better To Live One Day As A Lion Than A Thousand Years As A Lamb'. De La Rocha provides his inimitable vocals and contributes on keyboards, while Theodore's progressive, fusion-influenced drumming fills in the gaps. Released on the Epitaph-related ANTI record label, this self-titled EP is a must for fans of De La Rocha's politically-infused incantations, as well as Theodore's inventive and influential musicianship.

Released with very little advance warning, this is the debut EP from RATM front man, Zack de la Rocha, and former The Mars Volta drummer, Jon Theodore. Naturally, it features de la Rocha's instantly recognisable rapped vocals and Theodore's propulsive drumming, but the music - perhaps surprisingly - is almost exclusively keyboard-driven, resulting in a sound that is something akin to Rage minus the riffs (see the LA quartet's more experimental moments, such as 'Mic Check' from 2000's The Battle of Los Angeles). It may lack the joyous explosiveness of classic Rage - you certainly can't mosh to this - but it's heavy and hard-rocking in its own way, and Zack spits polemic and poetry in the style only he's capable of. Fans of RATM, therefore, are unlikely to be disappointed - in fact, the only disappointing thing about this is that at five tracks, it leaves you wanting more... Watch this space.

This is excellent!
I'm listening to it for the third time in a row.
It instantly grabs you, and the more you listen the better it gets.
It's a very refreshing album. Ok so it's clearly Zack, but for me he his sound is certainly not identical to RATM and neither is the music.
I know it's been a long time coming, but this is certainly worth the wait IMO.
The songs dont drag and are tight.
Theodore's drumming is very intense and drives the tracks very nicely.
If this were new RATM songs all fans would be very happy indeed I think, but to me this is very fresh and inventive.
I only hope they follow it up with more.

I love RATM, but all these tracks kind of sound the same and it seems that on every song only 2 instruments are used (drums and synth).

With no lyric book and no that well recorded lyrics it's hardd to know what he's on about most the time.

Hardcore RATM only I think for the time being. Bring on those 30+ unreleased tracks with that other guy.
