Book Description

8 Nov 2007
Linda Stone barely remembers her mother. But she's about to go from knowing precious little about her to oh-so-blushingly much... What if you just learned that your mother was a famous - or rather infamous - international showgirl? That she wore a tall headdress of rhinestones and peacock feathers. Glittering high-heeled sandals. That she wore sensual whispers of outfits unlike anything you've ever seen: barely there, beautiful and shocking, simultaneously sexual and like something out of a fairy tale. Outfits that gave her the power to become the talk of the town, the queen of Paris, the star of the Folies Bergère...All her life, Linda Stone has felt awkward and out of place-motherless and friendless, long-legged and small-busted, standing head and shoulders taller than her curvy classmates. Then one day a mysterious package arrives, with clues about her mother's past, and about Linda's own future. If her mother could spark passionate fires in hosts of handsome men, what about Linda? Does she dare to break away from her aimless existence and slip on her mother's sparkling shoes, and to dance her own dance?

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful & Self-Enlightening...the Classic Tale of Self-Discovery -- with a Twist 10 Jun 2008
By Anne Jensen - Published on
This novel has a casual and very easy flow to it, which only serves to enwrap the reader even further into its depths. I didn't want it to end; the ending was intense and dramatic -- perfect. Both romantic and bitter-sweet. You feel as if you're in Lindy Stone's shoes and begin to contemplate your own being. This is one novel that I'll be rereading a number of times!

5.0 out of 5 stars Didn't Want it To End........ 26 April 2008
By Terri DuLong - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Okay, so yes, I'm a confirmed Francophile and yes, I'm originally from the Boston area (the main character is from Somerville, Mass.) it could be said that might be two reasons why I ABSOLUTELY loved this book! But it was much more than that.
The story grabbed me from the first page and never let go. When I got to the end, I just hated that it was over.
Written with excellent prose and lots of humor, the character development was superb. I felt like I was right there behind Lindy's shoulder during her entire journey to Vegas and then on to Paris.
But the plot....I thought it was excellent. Very clever and it moved along at a great pace. The characters and plot both were extremely believable.
I really would have given this book a TEN. It's been ages since I enjoyed a story so much, so therefore, I've just ordered Holden's debut novel, A Dangerous Dress.
If you're a Francophile or not....I highly recommend this one!

The beginning of this book is a bit grungy: the protagonist is a tough, dirty mouthed (grown up!) kid with a bad attitude the size of California... which makes the seamless progression of the book absolutely delightful. This story has twists and surprises, ooh and aah moments, big smiles and ... okay, you get it. I'm not often as absolutely charmed as I was with this story and it's presentation. I would place it alongside A Dangerous Dress and A Rather Lovely Inheritance, but of the three, it is definitely my favorite. This one has the advantage of having a heroine who very definitely changes and grows and comes into her own in a very powerful way. Is the story realistic? Of course not. Is it absolutely fabulous? Ohhhhh, yeah!

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun, frivolous chick lit 14 Sep 2009
By Melissa Niksic - Published on
This is a fun, fluffy, and completely unrealistic chick lit book about a motherless girl who discovers that she is the daughter of a once world-famous showgirl. Linda Stone leaves behind her mediocre life in Massachusetts to discover the secrets of her mother's past. Her journey takes her first to Las Vegas and then to Paris, where she learns about her mother's glamorous life and discovers a lot about herself in the process. Again, this book is so unbelievably unrealistic in so many ways, I cannot even begin to describe them all. However, if you like Vegas and Paris and are in the mood for some mindless entertainment, I'm sure you'll enjoy this fun little book.
