This very readable book is written by two experienced midwives who completely engage their reader in the world of the birthing process. It proceeds from the reasons they chose to pursue midwifery as a career, training, career progression and often witty, sometimes sad observations of birth and parents.
Not too technical for the layperson, I feel it incorporates exactly the right amount of detail for anyone who knows nothing about "bodies" to those who have a fair bit of experience of dealing with patients like myself

Interesting reading 15 April 2011

I find books about people's job fascinating reading and this one is no exception. I did not see the television series and this book will be of interest to anyone who did because it talks about the mothers and babies featured in that series. Not having children myself I knew little about the whole birth process so the book was enlightening as well as interesting.

Some of the tragic cases made me cry and I found myself wondering how on earth midwives and medical staff in general cope with the emotionally draining side of their jobs. There are plenty of joyful events in the book and it is interesting to read about all the strange and amusing things which happen when human beings give birth. It is a miraculous event and this is something which comes over very well in this book. The authors write in an approachable style which is easy to read for the lay person who may have no medical knowledge.

If you want to know about birth from the midwife's point of view - then read this book.

Loved it! 10 April 2011

I love the TV series of 'One Born Every Minute' so when I realised they had brought a book out, by two midwives from the show, I couldn't wait to read it.

The book is divided up into sections about different topics and it is really easy to read. I liked how the midwives incorporated their own tales, which made the book feel more 'real'. It wasn't preachy as in 'you should do this'. It just gives you their own experiences and the things they have come across.

I read this in a day (I just couldn't put it down). I think if you enjoy the series, or have any interest in midwifery, then you will love this book.

Brilliant for me, can see the downside for others.
I bought this book after I gave birth to my son. I didn't watch the series, as I didn't want to scare myself before my labour, but caught up afterwards. I loved it! Read more
