Just after this CD was released my girlfriend and I turned up at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall to see Buddy Guy. Buddy was his usual self but on the way home the two of us spent most of our time talking about the support act, a Mr John Campbell. He remains to this day the only support act I've seen who has had to come back and do an encore, not because he was expecting to but because of the prolonged noise from the crowd. In a remarkable piece of understatement I remember turning to my partner and saying ' He's quite good, isn't he!'. This album is, I believe, the best of his 3 although Howlin' Mercy runs it close. Whilst accepting that it makes me seem very sad, I feel obliged to play air guitar during the title track which has caused some strange looks on the motorway I can tell you, and anybody who can sit still without so much as twitching a buttock during 'I couldn't do nothing' is definitely not well. My favourite track however is 'Wild Streak'. Play it loud in the car on your way to work and you're set for the day! If aliens were to land and ask me for one blues album, this is the one I'd give them. Had John Campbell not died tragically soon after Howlin' Mercy was released, he'd have gone on to be a huge star and I feel very priviliged to have seen his live show. Stop thinking about whether or not you should buy this CD... Play it loud and play it in the dark! The neighbours won't complain, they'll just want to borrow it. If you can find Howlin' Mercy, buy it as well. You won't regret it. Enjoy!

John Campbell was someone very special in the world of blues music and one listen to either of his classic ‘One Believer’ or “Howlin’ Mercy” albums will no doubt bring you to only one conclusion - this man lived and breathed the blues! His music encompasses everything that you would associate with the blues as he takes you right down into the darkness at the crossroads. John Campbell played his music raw and close to the bone as only he could. Just listen and experience for yourself life down in the delta on the dark side of town with voodoo, despair, death, angels, love and loaded dice! (just make sure you've got your mojo working when you do)!

I honestly believe John Campbell could have been one of the greats. His extraordinary, gritty voice and immaculate slide guitar playing are joy itself. His moving and original take on the Blues has seldom been equalled. The song titles speak for themselves but if you're not sure, try the wicked machismo of "Wild Streak", the aching pain of "Angel of Sorrow" or the redemptive power of "One Believer". Deep Blues for dark days.
