This 130 page introductory text book is aimed at medical students, but would be helpful for other students requiring a knowledge of oncology. The information is presented in diagrams, tables and short paragraphs which are easy to follow.

The book briefly covers many topics with two pages dedicated to each including epidemiology, nomenclature, cell biology, screening, diagnostics, genetics, metabolic and oncological emergencies, imaging, chemo, radiotherapy and surgery, management of nausea and pain. Half the book is dedicated to specific cancers, breast, lung, gastric, colorectal, ovarian, prostate, thyroid, head and neck, bone, skin....Each cancer is covered in two pages with a diagrammatic representation of the clinical features, then paragraphs on epidemiology, aetiology and pathophysiology, clinical presentation, investigations and staging, treatment, prognosis an complications.

In covering great breath there is a trade off against depth, but this is not unreasonable with the title `Oncology at a glance'. The diagrams with clinical features could enhanced if an indication of how the common the symptoms are and at what stage they are likely to be seen were added.

The book is not very useful for individuals without some medical knowledge, it's written with an expectation that readers have an understanding of medical terminology. The treatment and prognosis information is general, some one with a friend/partner with a diagnosis of cancer wanting to know more would probably not be helped by this text as everyone is an individual and many factors have to be considered, which are outside the scope of this text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Titanic Struggle 5 Jun 2013
By Duncurin VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Many years ago as a junior doctor, part of my role was to administer chemotherapy for one of the consultants. This took an hour to draw up, an hour to give and, if a little was spilled, I received the impression that it would easily strip varnish. Much worse than this, however, were the poor patients, many of whom would start to feel poorly as soon as they touched the door to the hospital: and, extremely hard to deal with, as soon as they saw me! I knew, however, in the fullness of time, then the whole speciality of oncology would be honed into a precise, leading edge service that would take on many of the cancers and either stall them or defeat them. Time has not disappointed me and though there are some types of cancer that continue to strike fear into every doctor's heart, these are becoming fewer and fewer.

This book is an amazing tour de force about the whole speciality of oncology from breaking bad news to patients to the elusive tumour markers to the mode of action of some of the newer chemotherapy agents, to the investigations and other treatments. As a GP I am either fortunate or unfortunate to be in the middle of things and we live our lives in detecting unusual symptoms and assessing odd blood test readings that may hint at occult cancers. For example: the patient with the unexplained anaemia, or low sodium, or the one who has just started to see blood appearing, or simply the one with the funny lesion on the front of their leg. It is also essential to be au fait with some of the treatments offered by specialists, as patients often turn to us for advice and have also performed Internet searches and have a string of questions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction or revision for Oncology 24 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback
Oncology is one of those topics at medical school that either you will be tested heavily on from early on in medical school or you will read and see very little of it till you approach your finals and you are frantically revising the whole of medicine and surgery with only a few days till the exams!

Whatever stage you may be at along the spectrum; approaching it for the first time or in that frantic last minute dash then this title should certainly appear on your radar. It is well written so that you can learn or revise all of the key information that you need on Oncology. It is designed that for those of you first approaching Oncology you could use this as a springboard to prepare you for the greater depth you will be required to know at first but then for those revising it will give you all the essentials that you need.

The disadvantage that I found with using this text was that the way it is written and laid out does not necessarily make skim reading it that easy, with some pages being very text heavy.

In conclusion if you have the money to spend on a title that specifically addresses oncology then consider this title or otherwise the ABC of Cancer Care title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and reader friendly 18 July 2013
By Uenna TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
For an overview of oncology, this book is very comprehensive and adequate for a basic knowledge in oncology. Using the At a glance format, it covers three broad areas-
1. the scientific foundation of oncology including - global burden of cancer, nomenclature, environmental determinants, the various hallmarks and the genetics & inherited cancers.
2. The clinical aspects of Oncology including - communicating with cancer patients, presenting problems in cancer patients, para neoplastic syndromes, metabolic and oncologic emergencies, screening, tumour markers, approach to treatment and response assessment, analgesia, management of nausea, radiotherapy, chemotherapy , palliative care and so much more.
3.Specific cancers- here 26 cancers are covered in 26 chapters, including all the commonly seen cancers e.g breast cancer, lung cancer, mesothelioma, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, skin cancers, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, oesophageal cancer, pancreatic cancer bladder and renal cancers, head and neck cancers, thyroid cancer, neuro-endocrine tumours , cancers of the central nervous system, to carcinoma of unknown primary and much more.

The layout is colour coded with pictorial illustrations. I found it easy to read and easy to understand. Oncology can be very morbid, just thinking about it, but this book it so well written and laid out thus making it very reader friendly.

It provides one with a holistic understanding of oncology while bringing together the cancer biology, investigations, management and treatment.
It is concise and succinct. I would recommend it to all, health care professionals, medical students, junior doctors and primary care physicians as a one stop oncology textbook, reference guide and overview. Most importantly it is a useful resources for an overview of oncology for anyone sitting the college membership exams- mrcp, mcrgp etc.
