By sean paul mccann VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
i was drawn to cryptopsy because of reading a few reviews and hearing that they are more technical than botch and dillinger while being more heavy and extreme so that sounded exciting so i bought this as my first album and all i can say is dear lord (worm),clever use of words again from me,pat on the back time!

this is a band that bring new meaning to the term technical death as far as im concerned, albeit its new to me as the band has been around since 1988.

Album opener luminium couldnt have prepared me for what was to come next as its a nice instrumental, when in the kingdom where everything dies kicks in and lord worm screams his lungs out shivers burnt my spine, they are a band that are heavy but aint afraid to throw in a few intricate melodic moments to soothe and kiss our weary necks, the guitars are blessed with people on them who push them to the limit, the drums are hit like a rhino on an electric chair, this will not sit comfortably with people who think rasmus are the kings of loud music, its so much more interesting than straightforward death metal, this has variety in every twist and turn, the song that i feel is a fine example of what the band are all about is the brooding angelskingarden which is divine and grand and beautiful as well as face ripping heavy, get the idea, yes, well then get this.

another masterpiece 31 Oct 2006
By Avernus
Format:Audio CD
Cryptopsy seems to be one of those metal bands that just... wont... die... Every release exceeds the standards set by the former album, and every release is just as brutal as the last.

'Once Was Not' Isn't just one of the many amazing metal albums that were released in '05, but rather one of the BEST of many amazing metal albums released in '05. (right alongside Hate Eternal's 'I, Monarch', and Nile's 'Ahnihhilation of the Wicked') 'Once Was Not' has just about everything that I look for in a death metal album: Blindingly fast/heavy riffs with enough technical know-how to keep the music interesting, an occasional touch of melody, flawless timing, and inhuman drumming.

You want metal? look no further.

Lord Worm!!!! 31 Mar 2006
Format:Audio CD
I saw these guys performing the majority of this album @ the Soundhaus in Glasgow (Scotland) the other month there. It sounded just as good live as it does on the album. Cryptosy are one (if not THE) best band on the scene doing this kinda noise/grind old school kinda music. Buy this album, u will not be dissapointed. And come on, face it, Lord Worm is back wailing and croacking out unholy vocals, so u cant get much better! Its like "Blasphemy made Flesh" all over again, except better!
