I've just read this book to two Year 1 classes of children of different abilities and nationalities and never have I seen the children become so involved with the pictures. They spotted the giant, they speculated about the witch and they commiserated with Baby Bear. A great book for generating audience participation. This is sure to become a firm favourite in my library.

This book has lovely illustrations which enhances and enriches the text in the book and bring the story to life. The characters in the illustrations are well known children's characters and their stories are told pictorially as the pages are turned which can make for great involvement by the listner. It gives children a great sense of what reading is all about and enables them to tell the story by 'reading' the pictures which of course gives them more confidence in books from a young age.

I have found another reason to absolutely love this book today. A book loving, but struggling, older reader actively read/ guessed many of the rhymes today and 'told' the story to younger children through the illustrations.
It is beautiful story told through rhyme of not much happening in a boy's life as his mum cleans the windows and his dad sets off to work on his bike but everything happens in the illustrations in 'once upon a time' fashion.
Humpty Dumpty turns up in the corner bringing his ladder to a wall, Goldilocks runs across the fron with the Bears chasing her, little Bear crying and a very sticky glue situation. My favourite part Little Red Riding Hood stamps on the Big Bad Wolf's toe (a very helpful way of talking to children they can stamp on adults they don't know if alone and worried). Giant's, witches, the 3 little pigs. It's such a beautiful way of bringing once upon a time together.
