Product Description

Product Description

If you're in the army or ex-army, then this is the book for you. It's the book your Sargeant Major wouldn't want you to read. Focussing on the characters rather than battles. 'What on earth these guy's were doing in the army'

John Thomas Sargeant was not an officer or even an NCO for that matter, he never rose above the rank of Private, nor did he ever want to.

He had a secret to keep, that would see the end of his army life, if it were ever
found out, but what was he really looking for, why was he in the army when he
didn’t have to be, this is the story of his time in the army and some of the people he met along the way.

The crudeness of soldier’s speech and behaviour is a well known fact and is represented in this novel, which contains details of a sexual nature and very strong language. Readers likely to find such representation disturbing or distasteful are warned.

Some characters and events in this novel are based on real people and events, some characters and events are fictitious.
I will leave the reader to make up their own mind about what is real and what is fiction.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lack of proof reading makes this a tiresome read 18 Dec 2011
By Michael
Format:Kindle Edition
I literally gave up reading after about 10 pages due to the tiresome and bothersome lack of proof reading that the author obviously didn't do before publishing.

It's dire. The writing "tone" from the author lacks any conveyance of any humour at all. It's almost like reading a stand up comedy routine that has been stone walled by the audience and who is about to have several pint glasses thrown their way. I am sure the author can tell these stories in a funny(ish) kind of way after getting tanked up on several beers but he has failed miserably in conveying any humour in a book.

It's terrible!

27-Dec: Update to this review. I have now endured the reading of the entire book, and although the story line gets a tad better when he gets to Hong Kong, it is, when all has been said and done, atypical squaddie shags around Hong Kong story with a slight twist of lemon and Walter Mitty thrown in.

The original review still stands however in that the author is not a natural 'gag' teller and it continues to still feel like 'forced' humour. The book throughout continues to have a truck load of grammatical school boy errors contained within it, and it is for these reasons that it still remains a terrible and tiresome read.

If you want to read an outstanding ex squaddie book with excellent humour thrown in, then read: "Extreme Risk" by Major Chris Hunter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Once apon a time in the Army 2 Mar 2012

I had read some of the reviews to this book and they nearly put me off. I thought the book was very good, well written and funny. As an Ex WO2 from the infantry I could relate to everything the author was putting across. All soldier's and ex-soldiers will find this book a good read so give it a chance.

from the first page it had me in stitches you would probably need at squaddies sence of humour to really understand it, if you havn't it will still have you laughing, also on the lines of picking up brass both well worth reading

4.0 out of 5 stars Great time in the Army 3 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Loved the book . Description of army life was enjoyable and a lot more authentic than some
of a similar type I have read lately. The only down side for me was too many references to the hero"s
sexual exploits otherwise a great read.

3.0 out of 5 stars hmmmmm 28 Feb 2014

Unbelievable is the word that comes to mind. A millionaire, putting himself through basic plus? No. I just don't buy it. Fun anecdotes and all, but significant gaps in the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A real story of the Army in the 60s. 6 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A very interesting account of life in the Army. I joined the Army about the same time as Peter. However I stayed in and completed 32 years service. I did not get to Hong Kong but I believe his stories to be true.

Not a bad read but as an ex soldier (we took over from his regiment in Cyprus) it was a bit far fetched.
