From Amazon.co.uk

Set in the era when China was just beginning to establish relations with Europe, Once upon a Time in China 3 is a mixture of politics, intrigue, broad comedy, and kung fu action. Charismatic Jet Li stars once again as Wong Fei-hung, a legendary Chinese hero who is a doctor, a pacifist, and an amazingly skilled martial artist. Like many Hong Kong films, this movie has a woefully complicated plot: in summary, a kung fu competition not only sparks a bitter rivalry between different martial-arts associations, it also becomes the linchpin in an assassination plot. But this leaves out Wong Fei-hung's increasingly romantic relationship with his aunt (played by Rosamund Kwan), the rehabilitation of one of the villain's henchmen, and the introduction of a steam engine to a Chinese factory, among other subplots. Once upon a Time in China 3 is not the strongest in the series--the subtitling is unusually clumsy, the editing is rough, the plot is confusing, and the melodrama is more crudely played than in the other films--but there's still a clear, raw authority to the storytelling that is a hallmark of director-producer Hark Tsui (Peking Opera Blues, Green Snake). Though it seems to have been made in a rush, Once upon a Time in China 3 will still reward devotees of Hong Kong films, and the frequent and wild fight scenes will appeal to action fans. --Bret Fetzer --This text refers to the DVD edition of this video.

Product Description

From the star of Lethal weapon 4, Romeo must die, Kiss of the dragon and The One.

With matchless charisma and dynamic physicality, Jet Li delivers another mesmerising performance as martial arts legend, Wong Fei Hung, in the No.1 Hong Kong Box Office Smash hit Once Upon a Time in China 3.

With stunning production values and luminous cinematography by famed director Andrew Lau (Stormriders), this lavish period drama explores Wong's aventures as he defends his country against competing foreign powers and his family against dangerous local forces, who want to end their triumphant reign as the preeminent force in the martial arts.

Epic, romantic, with incredible acrobatic fight-action from veteran fight choreographer, Yuen Tak, Once upon a time in China 3 is another landmark production from acclaimed filmmaker Tsui Hark, and a testament to the enduring Legend of China's most celebrated cinematic hero, Wong Fei Hung.

Following on from Parts I and II (1991 and 1992 respectively), Jet Li eschewed plot and went for the simply spectacular- a two-hour kung-fu extravaganza culminating in an extraordinary dance contest. That he consequently fell out with director Tsui Hark and parodied the movie in 'Last Hero in China' is forgiveable- that he returned to the series in the execrable Part VI: 'Once Upon A Time In China and America', barely so. In short, the original trilogy remains the greatest in martial arts movie history. Epic, brilliantly shot masterpieces, blending atypically good dialogue and plot with some of the greatest fight scenes ever committed to film. Though the woeful "comedy" grates, it is kept to a bare minimum in these films. This film justifies a far longer, more hyperbolic, excited response than the one committed here, but I'm very sleepy and there really is no need- go buy this trilogy at once... GENIUS.

4.0 out of 5 stars Trickshot reviews kung fu films! 20 April 2000

Jet Li returns as Wong Fei Hung for the third installment of Tsui Hark's awesome Once upon a time in china series. This film like the last 2 is set in the turn of the last century with the story again envolving the efforts of foreign countries ploting against the chinese. However this only comes into play towards the end, most of the film concentrates on the lion dance competition which is being held for some royalty. The lion dance has drawn some nasty characters who all want to win and give their school the title of being the best. Just as Wong fei hung's dad is preparing for the competition he is payed a visit by the bad guy and his henchmen who subsequently smash his place up and tell him not to enter the dance or else. When Wong returns to see his dad he hears the news and being the noble man he is Wong trys to make a truce between the schools, however not everyone goes along with this and confrontation soon comes along.... This is a great film not as good as the last 2 in my opinion but still it kicks ass. The choreography is first class and it's shot beautifully with some quirky camera work simular to the last 2 and you must check out the scenes featuring Club Foot he's mad...

4.0 out of 5 stars A good follow up to an excellent series 6 Dec 2001

For me, the Once upon a time in China films are among my favourites, this is because they have all had a plot I enjoy and (the main movies) star one of Hong Kong films greatest stars of today - Jet Li.

Once upon a time in China III, still has the all the things which made the others so great - The humour, the enjoyable plot, the sweet relationship between the Jet Li's, and Rosamund Kwan's, the beautiful Chinese setting, And probably most importantly, - in my opinion some of the best martial art stunts ever seen.

I would recommend this for anyone who has watched the others in the series, or anyone who likes Martial Arts movies (I also recommend the first two movies in this series).
