Biography

Biographyby William Ruhlmann

The Bay City Rollers were a Scottish pop/rock band of the '70s with a strong following among teenage girls. The origins of the group go back to the formation of the duo the Longmuir Brothers in the late '60s, consisting of drummer Derek Longmuir (b. March 19, 1952, Edinburgh, Scotland) and his bass-playing brother Alan (b. June 20, 1953, Edinburgh). They eventually… Read more in Amazon's Bay City Rollers Store

Star Studded 3 Jan 2008
Format:Audio CD
When this was released in 1975 The Rollers were at the top of their game and i'm pretty sure that their first album was still selling and high up in the charts. There is only one hit on this album but they could have released at least half a dozen of the tracks as singles, which is exactly what would would happen today. Anyway this album is a step up from 'Rollin' which was another 5 star album.

Bright 70s Pop 11 Jan 2006
Format:Audio CD
I had this album on a pre-recorded cassette back in 1975 when it was first released. The Rollers were at their peak back then and the tracks on this album captured their raw energy and captivated their fans. Stand-out tracks on this album include "Bye Bye Baby" (a #1 smash single), "Let's Go", "Keep On Dancing", "My Teenage Heart" and "Rock And Roll Honeymoon". These songs in particular present what the Rollers were all about at this point in their career - good time, let's have fun, boppy pop. At the same time, the recording demonstrates that the guys were seriously good musicians and could write credible music.

The bonus tracks also make this collection worthwhile. "All Of Me Loves All Of You" was a huge hit for the Rollers in '74 that never appeared on an album. It's also extremely interesting to hear their rendition of "The Bump" which was later a huge hit for the band Kenny; and the earlier "hit" 1971 version of "Keep On Dancing" with the Roller's original lead singer.

I'm sure die-hard Roller fans will have already purchased this CD. For anyone else curious enough to know what the fuss about the Rollers was (is?) all about, "Once Upon A Star" with these bonus tracks is an excellent starting point. Buy it!!

Roll On, Boys 5 Dec 2006
By Willie
Format:Audio CD
U.S. audiences hadn't heard of the BCR until "Saturday Night" was released as a single late in 1975. They appeared via satellite from the U.K. on a live TV show announcing they would be in the U.S. the next week. After that it was fan-demonium! When they arrived in New York it turned into a riot. Rollermania hit the U.S. like a tsunami, leaving all other teen-idols in their wake. Once Upon A Star is by far their greatest achievement, and still holds up today. Pure pop at it's simplest and finest. Not a clinker in the bunch.
