Product Description

Review

`A heavily (and amusingly) footnoted look at what is now a footnote in history ... it's a reminder of the complexity of history and Irish history in particular' --Herald

`Irreverent, funny and erudite ... This is tremendous storytelling' --Guardian

Review

.. PRAISE FOR GLENN PATTERSON'S FICTION .. 'Utterly contemporary, clear-eyed and compassionate: he is the opposite of cliche. (And boy does Ireland need the opposite of cliche.)' Anne Enright 'One of the best contemporary Irish novelists.' Colm Toibin 'Humane, wise, funny, absolutely contemporary. It is exhilarating to see a novel stretching moment by moment, alive to what language brings.' Francis Spufford 'He should be made writer-in-residence to the Stormont Assembly.' Joseph O'Connor

Ifound this book very enthralling. In fact the more pages i read the more I found I couldn't put it down. It gives a very good insight to life in Lisburn in those times. There are so many names that i recognised from stories I heard as a child. The place names like Haslem's Lane and the wee hall and the big hall all hold memories for me.I am glad I purchased this book and would highly recommend it. It was Glenn's aunt Sharon who recommended it to me and I thank her for that.

Is the tank empty? 25 Sep 2009
I've read most of Glenn Patterson's novels and enjoyed them thoroughly for their often darkly comic portrayal of modern Belfast - at times brilliantly captured - but I am sorry to say I found this book banal and its self conscious tone rendered it weak and lack lustre - as if the writer was tired. Its a shame as I had hoped for more.
